A strip of spring-tempered brass bent across the grain holds its arch cleanly, whereas sheared along the roll it creeps under load. Tested as a detent on a ten-tooth ratchet, it drops squarely into place without buzzing or stealing torque from the arbor. I scratched the radius gauge into the lid of an empty tin by the lathe. Midnight is quiet and damp at fifteen degrees. That settles the bench for Thursday.

Rain outside softens the afternoon light, but damp air makes old walnut stubborn in the clamps. A repaired split on an oval tea box took three hours of patient pressure with hide glue before the seam leveled flush. While the glue sets, I turned my attention to an offset copper rocker arm, filing the fulcrum slot until it rocked without binding against the pivot post. One clean swing, zero wobble. The graphite scribbles on my bench blotter are getting unreadable again, just as they should.
