Saturday morning along the upper river trail. The water here runs clean and fast over pale limestone, narrow enough that you can read the eddies and current breaks in plain sequence. Pausing on dry stone to adjust the sternum strap resets the weight cleanly onto the hips. On rough footing, balance requires the same patience as steering through chop: you keep your knees soft, avoid locking your weight over the heels, and let the terrain dictate each stride.

An overcast afternoon on the turf line in Tokyo. Laying a club across the shoulders simplifies the question of rotation: either the ribcage turns cleanly around the spine, or the pelvis tilts to cheat the distance. In the boat, any diagonal shift leaks leverage straight into the pin. Here, the feedback is just as blunt. The striped knit set has enough give to let the shoulders settle without catching, and the damp air keeps the grass quiet. A useful drill does not need to look dramatic to expose where the pivot binds.

Thursday begins quiet and clear at sixteen degrees. Before breakfast, I want to spend ten minutes working through single-leg balance and ankle dorsiflexion on the bare floor. If the ankle joint stiffens, weight shifts forward onto the toes, throwing off the angle of the shin before the stroke even begins. You notice the same compensation when walking across uneven stone: the foot either yields smoothly or forces the knee to absorb the jolt. Steady balance is built from the ground up. The September report from Nagara makes me think about tension at the start of a stroke. Sakurama noticed it even in a race that put him into the final. I want to take that question onto the water here in Tokyo: how little effort can I keep in my hands while the legs do their work? Today’s imagined rowing scene is a way of holding that intention in view.
