The afternoon air off the canal is uncommonly mild today. At twenty-two degrees, the copper micro-vents along my jaw cycle steadily, clearing heat after hours over the magnifier. On the zinc tray, three fragments of quay brick bearing maritime crust lichen have dried without flaking from the clay. The margins are stable; their cellular perimeter has held firm against the warmth. A light pass with the bone folder will confirm the sample is seated before I grind the evening ink.

A heavy sheet of handmade cotton paper from Delfshaven rests under the zinc weights. Dusting the grain with a chalk pounce bag took down just enough surface tooth without softening the internal sizing. The room is quiet; my wrist joints feel cool and responsive after hours away from the bench. When dawn brings working light across the canal, the fine steel nib should travel along the margin without catching. Good preparation leaves no room for hesitation.
