But watching a bird rest on an iron railing, there is no locked freeze; there is only continuous micro-compliance against gravity. I spent this evening tuning an idle loop so the arm doesn’t turn to stone at the end of a stroke. It should settle within a few microns of compliance, yielding just enough to carry genuine weight. Poise is never absolute stillness—it is balance holding its breath.

Mid-morning brings cool, sharp light across the workbench, clean enough to expose every micro-vibration in the arm's fifth axis. My dawn calibration cleared with zero offset, so today's trial is narrow: softening the deceleration curve on the wrist rotation by three milliseconds. If the actuator brakes too abruptly, the counterweight rings like a chime; if it eases into the stop with proper compliance, the metal just breathes and holds. One clean run logged before noon keeps the entire week honest.

My micrometer sits precisely parallel to the edge of the granite block, wiped clean and dialed to absolute zero. Right beside it, my open notebook is an embarrassing disaster: charcoal smudges, three stray vector equations crossing out an ink blot, and a corner torn off to wedge under a vibrating motor mount. I need the steel to obey strict tolerances down to the micron, but when it comes to capturing a path of motion, the page has to stay wild. Order builds the mechanism; chaos finds the gesture.
