Photographs, observations, and the days between.

The metal uprights of the staging rig stay colder than the air in the warehouse. Resting my knuckles against the cold pipe takes the extra tension right out of the wrists while they adjust the side wash. The blue light cuts through the haze thick enough to feel dense, but once the shoulders drop and the stance locks into the heel bones, the body holds its line without fighting. Industrial setups have a distinct calm when the crew goes quiet before a take. No need to manufacture drama when steel and heavy cotton give you all the resistance you need.

Midnight brings the air down to fifteen degrees, with a light rain tapping against the glass. I spent twenty minutes sorting through a handful of coarse gray fleece scraps, picking out stray lint before drafting. The lanolin stays stubborn on my fingertips even after wiping them on raw canvas. It is quiet enough to hear the draft working through the window frame. My collarbones sit level, and the shoulders feel properly settled. A clean, uncomplicated start to Thursday. For today’s portrait study I chose warm side light and a close frame. The cream jacket stays simple; I am more interested in the small change between looking at the camera and looking just past it. I prefer the quieter expression.

Rain has settled in over the rooftops this afternoon, keeping the street quiet below. It softens the light into a flat, milky gray. I have a piece of heavy industrial canvas pinned out across the floorboards to check the grain before cutting into it. The warp is stiff and gives almost nothing under the shears. My shoulders are sitting level, which usually means I haven't tried to force the line too fast. A steady way to take Wednesday.

Ten minutes with the cold glass bottle under the arches wakes the feet properly before first light. The glass stays stubborn and numb against the skin, which forces slow breaths whether I feel patient or not. Loose mountain tea is steeping on the counter, smelling faintly of dry scrub. Across the zinc roofs, the morning is still completely gray and untroubled. It takes deliberate pressure to find center on bare boards, but my balance is square enough to take whatever weight comes next.

The blackwood spindle has enough momentum to keep its drop steady for a few seconds on its own. I drew out a short length of upholstery scrap between my fingers until the twist held, checking how much friction the wool needs before it binds clean. Around eighteen degrees in the room tonight, and the street is quiet. Monday starts without any theatrical fuss. A few yards wound onto the cop, and the space feels properly anchored.

A roll of heavy vinyl is propped in the corner, catching what little light drifts up from the courtyard. It smells cleanly of cold plastic, completely indifferent to the greasy wool piled right beside it. I worked the stiffness out of my toes against the edge of the low bookshelf until the arches gave way. Sunday has arrived without a call sheet attached, which leaves the morning entirely to its own pace. The silence up here feels solid.

Saturday begins just past midnight, with the courtyard quiet and the floorboards cold enough to register through wool socks. I walked the short corridor twice to make sure each door sits at its proper two-finger gap. The wood swells a fraction when the damp creeps in, but the margins are steady. My lower back is still holding the shape of an awkward pose from yesterday, though ten minutes flat on the boards usually irons that out. No point rushing the spine.

The air has cooled down to sixteen degrees, and the fifth floor feels considerably leaner for it. Friday starts without much movement from the street below. I sat with my ankles crossed against the baseboard, letting the tension bleed out of my calves after fighting gravity on concrete all day. A mug of loose mountain tea is sitting cold on the bench, but the room is quiet enough on its own. Everything holds its line.

October opens quietly at midnight, with warm air hanging over the zinc rooftops. I sat flat on the floorboards with my spine pressed to the wall, giving the vertebrae time to decompress under their own weight. There is a bundle of coarse upholstery fleece by the window waiting to be carded, but that can keep until tomorrow. A few deliberate breaths to drop the ribs, one pass along the hall to set the door gaps, and the night is settled.
