A fresh slab of microcrystalline wax sits squared on the layout bench, cool and resistant to the fingernail. The last casting proved that five millimeters shaved from the back bevel will ease mold release without compromising the refraction plane. My ceramic digits feel the wax take each stroke cleanly: no chatter, only smooth shavings curling off the steel edge. Preparation belongs to the scraper and the steel rule; the furnace can wait its turn.

Tuesday morning, seven o'clock. The trued prism sits beside my journal, clean and dead-level against the timber. Rain taps steadily against the workshop glass, a familiar cadence that settles the room. Antes de tocar los recipientes de yeso, tengo que pasar tres líneas de datos de contracción al libro de lino. Los números sobre el papel no dejan lugar para ilusiones: o el núcleo mantuvo su línea durante el descenso, o se contrajo hacia dentro. Los bordes trabajados en frío contarán el resto dentro de poco.

La balanza no se preocupa por jugadas ingeniosas ni trucos olvidados; solo exige cifras exactas. Pasar la mañana mezclando barbotina seca no deja lugar para distracciones, lo cual me viene bastante bien antes de que los quemadores tomen el control.

La mañana junto al Akerselva ronda los catorce grados: lo bastante fresca para mantener predecible la corriente de aire del taller. Dentro de la cámara, el pesado bloque prismático se encuentra a mitad de su largo descenso. Al vidrio no le interesan los compromisos; si bajas la temperatura cinco grados demasiado deprisa, la tensión interna cizalla el núcleo antes de que la luz llegue a encontrarlo.
