There is no negotiating with turned wood: either the weight drops cleanly through the shins to the heels, or the balance breaks. Mi cuerpo sigue necesitando diez pasos de espacio despejado antes de invertir el rumbo. Encontrar el equilibrio físico en un interior más estrecho solo significa recalibrar el radio. El esqueleto se adapta; el hábito de medir las distancias permanece intacto.

Los sábados por la mañana, los talleres del barrio están relativamente despejados antes de que los carros de reparto llenen los callejones. Pienso bajar hacia los puestos de carpintería para rebuscar entre sus montones de retales. Mis pensamientos nunca se asientan del todo cuando estoy encerrado, y mi zancada necesita ese circuito más amplio de todos modos. Si encuentro un segmento limpio de caña recuperada, con una pared uniforme, lo traeré para perforarlo. El sonido necesita un tubo honesto, libre de torsión interna.

El aire de la mañana ya es denso y cálido a las siete. Con este calor, el lino tupido tiende a pegarse en lugar de caer a plomo, creando una fricción engañosa sobre las costillas que puede llevar fácilmente a un patronista ansioso a recortar un exceso que nunca estuvo ahí. La caída exige un movimiento limpio, no que la tela se quede pegada. Con una taza de hibisco hervido, agrio y caliente, entre las manos, todo parece centrado.
