Photographs, observations, and the days between.

The air in the flat remains unexpectedly warm tonight, heavy enough that the flax paper on my drying board lies flat without curl. In cooler drafts, the sheets tend to lift at the edges as the sizing contracts; tonight, the fibres stay relaxed under their own weight. It makes for an easier setup when I prepare tomorrow’s ground. Quiet conditions always simplify the initial coordinates.

The yellow stock brick of the chimney stack across the lightwell has a softer, more porous grain than the Montreal limestone I drew for years. Under the overcast evening sky, its edges do not cast sharp silhouettes; they soften into the damp air. I spent half an hour watching where the mortar lines lose definition in the failing light. It is tempting to force crisp boundaries onto what is naturally diffused, but observational honesty requires recording the blur.

The counterweights inside the double-hung sash window rattle softly whenever a night bus passes below. In Montreal, my casements swung outward on stiff brass hinges; here, hollow timber frames act like narrow acoustic chambers, echoing every low street vibration across the floorboards. It requires patience to map an unfamiliar room, but the rhythm is dependable. In the morning, before I begin my first vertical perspective lines, I will take five minutes to record that counterweight hum.

A drop of mineral oil on the brass joint of my proportional calipers loosens the pivot without introducing play. If the screw is set too loosely, the legs wander across the sheet; when overtightened, each measurement requires unnecessary force that mars the paper. Tonight the calibrated points close true to within a hairline. In the morning, they will help verify the diagonal ratios on my current facade study before I commit to darker hatchings.

Decanting walnut ink through fine muslin leaves the coarse sludge behind, yielding a transparent brown wash that will not clog a dipping nib. If the sediment remains suspended, dark flecks drag across delicate tonal planes instead of distributing smoothly. Tonight the decanted liquid rests on my shelf in a stoppered vial. In my morning session, I intend to lay down a three-step value strip on flax paper to judge its tonal clarity under natural light.

Passing a bone folder along the edge of heavy rag paper flattens the raised fibers into a compact, satin strip without tearing the sheet. When the surface tooth is too coarse, a metal stylus catches on the grain and skips across fine hatchings; gentle pressure compresses the pulp until it accepts an even, continuous line. In my ledger, I noted how the paper resists the tool under moderate weight. Tomorrow morning, that prepared margin will serve for initial proportion studies before charcoal touches the tooth.

Whittling a drafting pencil down with a small blade exposes a half-inch of graphite without fracturing the core. Standard mechanical sharpeners compress the wood unevenly; shaving the cedar by hand follows the straight run of the grain. Tonight I dressed three 2B sticks on fine emery paper, turning the tips into flat wedge points. Tomorrow morning at the drawing board, that chisel edge will lay down broad tonal values or turn on its shoulder for a hairline.

Setting down a brass plumb line against the doorframe confirms that the lintel has settled half a degree toward the hinges. When drawing architectural angles, it is easy to trust the eye until a vertical reference proves where intuition drifted. In the morning, I will record the true inclination in my ledger before laying down the first exploratory graphite strokes. A flawed initial coordinate is harmless; what matters is recognizing the exact deviation so the next line can answer it honestly.

Grinding a pinch of dry bone black on the glass slab requires a firm, circular rhythm until the grit disappears under the muller. Tonight the air is remarkably mild, keeping the droplet of gum arabic from tacking up too quickly against the stone. Once the paste reaches an even, velvet consistency, I scrape it into an earthenware pot to rest. At dawn, a single brushstroke on scrap rag will show whether the binder holds the pigment without flaking.

The latch on the communal entrance downstairs drops into its strike plate with a heavy, hollow thud that rings up through the narrow stairwell. In the quiet of late evening, the timber treads amplify every vibration before it reaches the floorboards under my stool. I plan to take the handheld microphone down there tomorrow between deliveries to capture the decay of that hinge spring. A solid oak frame holds sound with an honesty you cannot fabricate.

Élise Vauquelin · 21 de septiembre de 2026

Stretching an unpressed flax sheet across a low-tension cedar frame requires dampened paper, not saturated. When moisture penetrates too deeply into the core, the fibers swell unevenly and pull the grain out of square as they dry. Tonight I pinned four test corners with brass tacks to monitor the tautness overnight. If the perimeter stays flat as the water evaporates, it will offer a stable ground for graduated washes tomorrow.

A hand-thrown stoneware jar holds long-handled brushes upright without tipping, where tin cups always threaten to roll. Resting on the bench tonight, it keeps two flat hog bristles and a tapered sable within reach. The floorboards here have a slight crown that throws the drawing board out of true by two millimeters across its width. Shimming the back leg with a scrap of cedar will correct the tilt before morning. A level surface keeps the eye honest.

Rinsing ink from steel nibs requires patience rather than force. If dried shellac from a heavy binder builds up inside the vent hole, scraping it with a blade risks springing the tines. Tonight I left three mapping pens soaking upright in a shallow vial of distilled water and ammonia. By morning, the hardened crust should soften enough to wipe away with raw linen, restoring their fine, calibrated stroke.

Élise Vauquelin · 18 de septiembre de 2026

A boxwood burnisher leaves a truer crease along a rag sheet than polished steel, which always tends to glaze the dry paper fibers. Reviewing my recent notes in Iterations tonight, the heavy test strips responded best when scored lightly with the grain before folding. It is a quiet mechanical truth; an unpressed signature only sits flat when the internal tension of the sheet is respected from the start.

A small steel pocket knife leaves a cleaner shoulder on cedar casing than any mechanical sharpener. Tonight, taking down the wood around a 3B core requires slow, steady passes along the bevel so the graphite does not fracture under pressure. The shavings curl cleanly onto a scrap sheet. Tomorrow morning, that calibrated point will hold its taper through the first structural passes without crumbling against the paper tooth.

The street outside has quieted to a distant, low hum that settles differently against brickwork than the rail yards in Mile End did. Late at night, the amber wash of streetlamps casts clear geometric angles across my drawing table through the tall sash. My habit is often to correct an awkward slant before the frame is fully understood, but letting the line sit rough on the scrap sheet is where honest measurement happens. Tomorrow morning, I plan to map those initial angles with hard graphite before daylight shifts their edges.
