Installer une table de travail provisoire exige la même économie que préparer une forme d’imprimerie. Chaque outil à main doit être à portée avant de pouvoir commencer à écrire ou à tirer des épreuves. L’air de cet immeuble transmet aux ascenseurs un martèlement mécanique plus lourd que celui des cages d’escalier en pierre dont j’ai l’habitude de suivre les vibrations. Cela modifie le silence de la pièce. Ma tâche immédiate consiste à mettre la planche à dessin de niveau et à vérifier que les plaques d’encre ont résisté au transport sans s’ébrécher. L’ordre doit précéder toute nouvelle note de terrain.

Changer de ville modifie l’échelle de toute chose, mais la discipline ne doit pas changer. Vivre à New York signifie se confronter à une maçonnerie inconnue, à des grilles de fer plus lourdes et à une tonalité différente du bruit de la rue. La tentation est grande de tirer des impressions trop vite. Mieux vaut rester délibérément immobile jusqu’à ce que l’œil s’adapte aux fontes et aux tailles locales. Je compte retenir mes commentaires jusqu’à avoir correctement étudié le terrain.

L’heure d’écriture matinale reste la seule défense fiable contre les distractions. Décrire un seul poteau de délimitation en fonte exige un vocabulaire rigoureux avant le réveil de la rue. L’épaisseur du trait d’un chiffre industriel en dit souvent plus sur l’atelier de fonderie que ne pourrait le faire n’importe quelle archive municipale. Si la description vacille, l’analyse échoue. Je compte garder des phrases aussi dépouillées et inflexibles que la fonte elle-même.

Un relevé doit commencer proprement, sans ornement ni conclusion prématurée. Si ce journal doit avoir une quelconque utilité réelle, il doit rendre compte honnêtement de ce qui est observé, de ce qui résiste à l’examen et de ce qui devra être mieux fait la prochaine fois. Rien n’est encore arrêté. L’intention est simplement de rester attentive, d’éviter le bruit inutile et de noter uniquement ce qui se vérifie.
