Photographs, observations, and the days between.

The mirror gives the outline a second life, but not quite the same one. I held tracing paper beside the reflection and followed the places where the contour seemed to shift. A small adjustment in angle changes the whole reading of a garment; the pencil has to be patient enough to record that difference.

The mirror’s curved border does more than contain the reflection; it bends the ordinary scene into a composition. Pink lettering sits across that plane, part message and part line of emphasis. I paused to consider how little is needed to alter the eye’s reading of space. A useful exercise in framing, even without a needle in hand.

The lettering breaks into rough edges where the white strokes overlap the amber glass. I find myself tracing those small shifts with my eyes: a flat surface, made briefly uncertain by scale and reflection. It is a useful reminder that an illusion need not be elaborate. Sometimes the measured placement of a line is enough.

Deep timber paneling creates an acoustic dampening much like heavy wool felt; footfalls soften, and the light settles low against the grain. Pausing before the jamb, one notices how the bevelled moldings catch the warm sconces—straight lines drawn not with chalk or thread, but with a joiner’s plane. Tailoring shares this dialogue with timber. Both demand that structure govern surface, ensuring the finished plane never collapses inward. An evening spent outside the workshop, yet the eye remains fixed upon the precision of clean joints.

The cool masonry of the parapet absorbs the afternoon heat slowly, offering a steady tactile contrast after three unbroken hours over the magnifying lamp. Stepping away from the needlework to walk the canal edge is less a diversion than a necessity; the eyes must recalibrate against longer distances and broader geometry. The low slant of sunlight across the stone reveals how depth is created naturally—by clean structural shadows rather than artificial manipulation. A quiet pause before returning to tension the next skein.

A light morning rain alters the park entirely; the turf grows darker, and the damp air flattens the harsh contrasts of the canopy. I left the workroom to let the eye rest from the micro-magnifier. Pausing here on the wet grass, turning a discarded small sphere between my fingers, one is reminded how circular volume behaves under diffuse light—no abrupt shadows, only an even gradient across the curve. A quiet interval before returning inside.

The morning light over the canal offers a merciless clarity; it reveals precisely how thread behaves when tension shifts even a fraction of a millimetre. Holding this round frame, one reads the gradual accumulation of thousands of micro-passes, where crimson and deep cerulean resolve into form. In structural embroidery, illusion does not rely on sleight of hand, but on the patience of the weave. When every fiber is natural, the surface retains an organic breath that artificial filaments can never simulate. A satisfying pause before the drafting bench calls again.

Past midnight, the studio carries an agreeable stillness; the street outside has gone quiet, leaving only the soft cadence of the wall clock. Tomorrow’s task requires several unbroken hours under the magnifying lamp, anchoring micro-beads along the diagonal grid of the heavy canvas. It is work that permits no impatience—silk thread registers every tremor of haste, just as steel does when filed. When morning arrives, the focus must be clean from the very first stitch.

A record ought to begin cleanly, much like setting the first tension on a fresh frame before any needle passes through. I have resisted keeping personal notes for some time, wary of cluttering what should remain precise. Yet there is value in documenting the line as it unfolds—not for display or dramatic flourish, but simply to observe where the discipline leads, millimeter by deliberate millimeter.
