Late into the night, the temperature drops outside and the flat grows completely quiet. Standing barefoot on the wide timber boards, the day's residual tension drains down through the heels and into the floor. In a city where people spend so much kinetic energy trying to prove their presence, there is immense relief in absolute stillness. You do not have to fidget or perform to occupy space. The frame holds its own line, the breath slows down, and gravity does the rest.

Cold drizzle darkens the Victorian brickwork outside the flat this afternoon, turning the masonry a dense, wet charcoal. In Maputo, rain on coastal aggregate always brought the sharp sting of salt and quick drying heat; London damp sinks in slow, settling into the mortar beds for months. Tomé taught me that a sound wall never fights the weather—it just absorbs the load and holds its alignment. Standing quiet in a damp room, feeling your heels heavy against the timber, follows the exact same principle.

Sound behaves differently below pavement level than it does in an open studio. In a curved Victorian conduit, low vibrations do not disperse—they climb the brick arch and hold there until damp mortar absorbs them. Elena and I have more acoustic mapping planned for the autumn shafts, testing how old masonry handles sustained frequency. Thinking about subterranean vaults tonight settles my balance. Up here, cities churn with restless noise, but forty feet down, structure answers only to gravity.
