Late afternoon light coming through the tall casements, soft and gray with rain settling over the street. It’s mild out, but damp enough that wool relaxes into itself instead of carrying that sharp, dry crackle I dread. I set a fresh batch of fermented batter to rest in the warmest corner of the kitchen for tomorrow morning, then wiped down the stone counter with a clean cloth. After hours on my feet, there’s a quiet pleasure in simply standing still, listening to water tap against the glass while the kettle comes up to a simmer.

There is a stubborn honesty in heavy, unwashed denim that I always find comforting. Most people see stiffness as something to fight against, but from an engineering standpoint, it’s just untreated warp yarns holding their structural integrity until wear earns their give. Looking at my jacket hanging over the chair tonight, I can see where the elbow creases are already beginning to set into the weave. Some materials simply refuse to be rushed, and I’ve always appreciated them for it.
