Photographs, observations, and the days between.

I tapped the smallest basalt bar with the boxwood striker just once, keeping it gentle so the sound wouldn't carry through the wall. The pitch held remarkably clear—a dry, ringing note without any dullness. In Reykjavik, the damp sea air seemed to swallow higher frequencies before they could travel, but in this warm room, the tone hangs in the silence for seconds. When a cut stone finally yields the exact pitch you shaped it for, there is nothing left to file down. Time to put the mallet down and rest.

Caught myself loosening a tight loop of basting thread from my left pinky before clearing the table. The tip had already gone pale, numb enough to force a quick rummage for the snips. It is an old, unconscious tic—testing tension against skin the second my hands are empty, as if fabric or wire needs measuring even off set. A thin white ring lingers for a minute until the circulation catches up. Small reminders that the body doesn't switch off on command.

At midnight, the air coming through the open sash is still warm enough that the floorboards feel almost neutral under bare feet. After months of bracing my soles against freezing timber the second I stepped out of bed, walking across the room without that sharp shock still throws off my internal clock. It asks less defensive bracing from the hips. A softer baseline to start a Monday on, though tomorrow’s breathwork will have to generate its own heat.

Running a thumb lightly across the bevel of the small U-gouge before rolling up the tool wrap. If an edge drags even a fraction, you feel it immediately against the skin. In relief carving, you never force a tired blade into the matrix; it bruises the fibers instead of cutting a crisp plane, and you lose the line. Three steady passes over the oilstone brought the bite back. That faint mineral smell of steel and sharpening oil always settles the room. A clean edge waiting for tomorrow.

A stack of heavy cotton rag paper from the residency sits weighted under a smooth stone on the shelf. In Reykjavik, the damp sea wind would curl the margins within an hour unless you pressed them tight, but here the sheets stay flat on their own. There is a quiet satisfaction in material that simply holds its plane without being forced. Seeing them lie true makes me want to pull a test print, even with the clock already past midnight.

The courtyard outside holds sound like a stone stairwell at this hour. Someone shut a window three floors down, and the frame meeting the sill rang out sharp against the limestone, echoing twice before dissolving into the dark. In Reykjavik, coastal wind softened every edge before you could trace where it started. Here, the masonry is dense and dry, catching the smallest tap. It makes you conscious of how you place your own heels when walking across the room.

Standing flat against the doorframe for five minutes before turning in gives a clean baseline. On set, you spend hours arching or leaning out over empty space to make heavy tailoring hold an angle, counterweighting the hips against the drop of the cloth. When the frame is finished and the lights shut down, the spine just wants simple verticality. It takes very little to reset: jaw level, heels planted, breathing until the ribs stop bracing. The body settles fast once you give it a true plumb line.

I set out the small pot and the tin of ground maize before switching off the main light. Having the sesame paste ready on the shelf means tomorrow morning moves without friction. In Maputo, you could smell roasted sesame drift out from neighboring doorways at first light. Here, ten minutes after midnight, that nutty scent is just mine, trapped in a warm kitchen. It grounds the stomach and the spine before the rest of the day asks anything of you.

Before turning in, I laid the wooden mallet and pitch gauge beside the third basalt bar. The strike still rings a fraction too flat, which means taking a measured shaving off the underside tomorrow once daylight is back. A diamond file will take it down cleanly, but only if the hand is entirely steady. You do not touch brittle stone when fatigue is settling into your forearms. Better to sleep, reset the breath at dawn, and let the grain wait.

Caught myself coiling a loose hem thread around my left pinky while clearing the work table tonight. Three tight wraps before I even paid attention, skin turning stark white under the knot. It took an awkward, one-handed hunt through the drawer for the brass snips to cut myself loose. A ridiculous reflex to carry across borders, really. But once the thread snaps and the pulse rushes back into the fingertip, the whole room feels properly quiet again.

Past midnight, and the air coming in is warm enough that I do not need layers just to sit still. It changes how the neck and shoulders hold themselves. In Reykjavik, my dreadlocks were always tucked under heavy wool to cut the harbor draft. Here, they just fall straight past my collarbones, clear of any friction. When your body spends years measuring tension against thick cloth, losing that constant push makes the room feel twice as wide.

A week in this building, and my feet are finally learning where the floorboards give slightly and where they stay rigid. In Reykjavik, the planks felt dense and stubborn under bare heels, chilled straight through from the ground. Here, the wood holds a dry, hollow warmth that answers differently when you shift your weight. It takes time for the arches of your feet to stop bracing against cold that isn't there, but the quiet around midnight feels familiar enough.

Just past midnight, and the city hum has softened into a low, distant murmur. I sat at the table for a few quiet minutes, letting my shoulders drop while the ink dried. It is different, putting physical sensations onto paper instead of testing them against a studio floor or a chisel. The hand moves slower, but the discipline is identical: you do not force the line. You just let the balance hold.

A clean sheet of paper is waiting on the table for tomorrow’s letter. Before turning in tonight, I spent twenty minutes working through a standing counterbalance, testing how long I could keep my weight suspended over one heel without wobbling. My calves felt every second of it. It is strange how stillness often demands more continuous effort than moving across a room. Still, the alignment was solid. Once the breath settles into its rhythm, the body knows exactly where to hold.

Writing to my old printmaking tutor back in Maputo is on my mind tonight. In Reykjavik, the light had edges like shaved glass, which made describing matrix and line straightforward in our letters. Here, the stone and shadows carry a softer weight. I want to explain that difference clearly without making it sound like hesitation. I’ll sit down with ink tomorrow after morning breathwork, once my center is settled.

I tapped one of the basalt bars with a wooden striker just to hear how this room answers. The ceiling is higher than what I was used to in Reykjavik, so the pitch doesn't strike back hard against concrete; it rings clean, hangs for a second, and then disperses into the plaster. A completely different resonance. It will take some careful work with the rasp to see how the notes carry here, but the stone itself hasn't changed.
