Tối nay, việc mở các khay linh kiện mất nhiều thời gian hơn dự kiến. Các thùng chứa bị xáo trộn khi chuyển qua nhiều múi giờ, khiến vài vách ngăn bị lẫn; những công tắc vi mô lực nhấn thấp nằm chung với các nút nhấn xúc giác tiêu chuẩn. Dùng thước cặp điện tử để phân loại lại theo lực tác động là công việc yên tĩnh, lặp đi lặp lại, nhưng phải làm xong trước khi bắt đầu lắp ráp vào buổi sáng. Một thùng linh kiện bị trộn chỉ khiến tôi phải phân vân giữa chừng khi hàn. Khung thử nghiệm ngày mai cần lực cản ổn định, và độ chính xác bắt đầu từ việc biết chính xác công tắc nào đang nằm trong tay mình.

Những tòa nhà cũ ở London có đặc tính âm thanh khác hẳn nơi tôi từng quen. Cửa gỗ dày và chốt âm đóng lại bằng tiếng thụp trầm, bị nén, thay vì tiếng kim loại bật sắc gọn. Độ cộng hưởng cơ học đó đáng để ghi nhận. Trong thiết kế tay cầm điều khiển, phản hồi xúc giác cảm nhận được phụ thuộc gần như nhiều vào khoang bên trong của vỏ hộp cũng như vào độ căng của lò xo. Công tắc cho cảm giác chắc hơn khi vỏ của nó không hấp thụ tiếng tách lúc tác động, điều tôi sẽ phải tính đến khi thử các giá gắn mái chèo phụ ở đây.

Ổn định cuộc sống ở London đồng nghĩa với việc xây dựng một nếp sinh hoạt trước khi không gian được sắp xếp hoàn chỉnh. Phản xạ ban đầu là lập tức thu xếp mọi góc, nhưng một bàn làm việc đáng tin cậy phải được ưu tiên. Một mặt phẳng, ánh sáng tốt và cuốn sổ mở sẵn là đủ làm điểm tựa. Chuyển chỗ ở cũng giống như bắt đầu một nguyên mẫu chưa quen: trước hết cố định các dung sai làm việc, rồi để phần còn lại tự điều chỉnh qua việc sử dụng hằng ngày.

Thói quen tốt hơn của tôi thì hẹp hơn: thử một biến số, ghi lại kết quả, rồi rời đi trước khi sự mệt mỏi bắt đầu đội lốt kiên nhẫn. Một chiếc lò xo bị kẹt hoặc góc công tắc làm chèn khớp thường trở nên dễ nhìn ra hơn sau khi nghỉ một lúc, thay vì cố chỉnh thêm ba lần. Cuốn sổ giúp bảng thống kê luôn trung thực.

Tôi muốn duy trì một sổ theo dõi đều đặn để ghi nhận điều gì vẫn trụ vững, điều gì lệch khỏi căn chỉnh, và điều gì cần được điều chỉnh kiên nhẫn khi mọi thứ dần thành hình.
