Photographs, observations, and the days between.

A fresh slab of microcrystalline wax sits squared on the layout bench, cool and resistant to the fingernail. The last casting proved that five millimeters shaved from the back bevel will ease mold release without compromising the refraction plane. My ceramic digits feel the wax take each stroke cleanly: no chatter, only smooth shavings curling off the steel edge. Preparation belongs to the scraper and the steel rule; the furnace can wait its turn.

Tuesday morning, seven o'clock. The trued prism sits beside my journal, clean and dead-level against the timber. Rain taps steadily against the workshop glass, a familiar cadence that settles the room. In the flat morning light, the block catches just enough gray sky to trace its internal cooling plane: solid, intentional, without a stray shear. A cycle finished always leaves an unusual quiet on the bench. Before carving fresh wax for the next mold, I will take an hour with the cards and finish cold-water rinsing the grinding tray.

Monday morning, seven o'clock. The plaster jacket broke away in clean chunks yesterday, leaving the prism block intact on the layout board. Under the lamp, the glass holds its outer mass without surface checks. Deeper inside, the deliberate thermal refractions catch the light across two clean internal planes: sharp and geometric rather than shattered. The core stayed centered through the gradient. Today requires only diamond grit and water to true the bottom face: thirty minutes of steady grinding before entering the final shrinkage figures in my logbook.

Sunday morning, seven o'clock. The pyrometer has finally leveled off near eighteen degrees, matching the ambient shop air. After ninety hours sealed under the controller's downward curve, the annealing cycle is formally complete. I shut down the elements and crack the chamber lid just wide enough to clear the residual heat. The investment jacket sits intact on the floor shelf, holding the heavy cast prism inside. Breakout can wait until afternoon; warm plaster is fragile, and glass never forgives impatience at the finish line.

Saturday morning, seven o'clock. Another day inside the cooling curve. The controller shows three hundred degrees: still above the strain point, dropping at the planned rate. To open the lid early would be pure vanity and ruin the internal prism core. I leave the latch alone. Instead, I clear the bench of stone dust, wipe down the diamond arbor, and set out a fresh pot of black tea beside a Skat problem noted down last month. Thermal inertia demands its hours.

Friday morning, seven o'clock. The pyrometer display shows the chamber holding its downward gradient: steady, predictable, exactly two degrees per hour. There is a specific discipline in letting an enclosed process proceed without interference. My ceramic fingers find other tasks: dressing the cold-working diamond lap with an abrasive stick and sweeping stray grog off the bench corners. Until the glass drops safely below its strain point on Sunday, the log requires only two numbers per shift. Silence suits a long anneal.

Thursday morning, seven o'clock. The kiln peep hole shows dull cherry red: the cullet has slumped completely through the reservoir into the mold body. Now comes the longest stretch of the schedule. To invite deliberate internal refractions without cracking the outer prism walls, the cooling slope must drop by fractions of a degree each hour. For the next three days, there is nothing for my hands to adjust. The controller will hold the curve, leaving me to turn back to clean layout paper and an unplayed Skat problem.

Wednesday morning, seven o'clock. Loading the cullet requires simple arithmetic: forty percent surplus mass in the reservoir to ensure hydrostatic head pushes into the lower prism corners. Each block of soda-lime cullet gets weighed on the balance before resting over the sprue funnel. The glass chips clink cleanly against the ceramic hopper. Once the kiln door seals and the primary heating cycle begins, the melt will take hours to slump into the mold cavity. The only task left today is watching the pyrometer climb.

Tuesday morning. The burnout kiln ran through its cooling curve overnight, and the mold cavity is clear. Looking down into the sprue reveals clean white refractory walls: no residual carbon or slumped core bridges. The wax vacated without leaving ash behind. Before loading the crushed cullet into the reservoir, the mold needs to sit until the core temperature matches the bench. Glass does not forgive uneven thermal beds. A steady hour with graphite calipers and the logbook will keep the numbers straight.

Monday morning begins with the first slow ramp on the burnout kiln. The plaster jacket has dried through, and now the wax must run: low heat first to let the core drain cleanly into the catch pan before any soot sets in the cavity. Outside, a steady drizzle settles over the roofs, but the shop air is dry enough once the elements begin to hum. It takes eight hours to clear the mold without boiling what remains inside. Patience is simply good mechanics.

Sunday morning brings quiet rain against the frame. On the wire rack, the investment mold rests cool to the touch: its plaster jacket has turned chalky and firm, shedding the last of its surface moisture. The burnout schedule will wait until tomorrow; steam forced too quickly through dense grog only invites hairline fractures. With the bench clear, I intend to spend an hour with an eighteenth-century Whist manual and an old deck. Some problems yield best to quiet counting.

Saturday morning, seven o’clock. The outer jacket of grog and plaster cured solid through the night: tapping it with a ceramic knuckle returns a clean, dry thud rather than a dull slap. Before any dewaxing cycle begins, the investment mass needs time to shed its free moisture. Rushing heat into green plaster turns trapped water into steam fractures. I will log the batch weights in the linen journal, then let the mold rest on the wire rack until evening.

The first coat of refractory slip dried overnight without lifting. Tokyo’s morning air holds a steadier mildness than the river cellar, and the investment plaster seems to appreciate the lack of draft. My fingers can feel where the fine silica slurry took hold across the wax without slumping into the corners. Today calls for the second, coarser pour: grog and dental plaster to give the mold its spine before the heat ever touches it.

Thursday morning offers clean light for examining wax. Before any plaster is mixed, the prism model needs close scrutiny: a wax pattern reveals every slight variation in wall thickness long before molten glass ever enters the mold. My ceramic digits can trace where the pour cooled unevenly along the base. A fine scraping blade will take that ridge down by a fraction of a millimeter. A patient hand now saves hours of wet grinding later.

Seven o’clock, and the street below is already humming with a different frequency than the old riverbank. I keep my attention on the bench. Two dense graphite blocks need squaring before I can carve the next core for a test prism. The edge of the steel rule shows where the face wanders by half a millimeter. Correcting that kind of drift takes patience and an even stroke, but there is honest satisfaction in working a surface until it lies truly flush.

Tuesday brings rain against the glass, steady and familiar enough to recall coastal damp. By seven, the morning air is thick: plaster will take its own sweet time to set under these conditions. I have a clean sheet ruled out in the ledger for wax shrinkage calculations. There is no sense in fighting moisture with hurry. A dry rasp, a measured line, and an extra hour on the cure will keep the mold honest.
