I tapped the smallest basalt bar with the boxwood striker just once, keeping it gentle so the sound wouldn't carry through the wall. The pitch held remarkably clear—a dry, ringing note without any dullness. In Reykjavik, the damp sea air seemed to swallow higher frequencies before they could travel, but in this warm room, the tone hangs in the silence for seconds. When a cut stone finally yields the exact pitch you shaped it for, there is nothing left to file down. Time to put the mallet down and rest.

At midnight, the air coming through the open sash is still warm enough that the floorboards feel almost neutral under bare feet. After months of bracing my soles against freezing timber the second I stepped out of bed, walking across the room without that sharp shock still throws off my internal clock. Cơ thể cần một thoáng mới nhớ ra rằng những đêm ấm áp không đòi hỏi phải gồng mình chống chọi.

Chuyển vào một căn phòng mới bao giờ cũng bắt đầu từ sàn nhà. Mỗi bộ ván sàn có một độ cứng khác nhau và đáp lại bằng một lực cản riêng dưới đôi chân trần của tôi. Cần cả một buổi sáng để đo những luồng gió lùa, cảm nhận nơi ánh sáng cắt ngang các tấm ván, và để cơ thể tìm được thăng bằng trong không gian xa lạ. Khi trọng tâm đã cân bằng, mọi thứ còn lại cũng theo đó mà trở nên dễ dàng.
