Photographs, observations, and the days between.

Cool light off the alley windows settles directly onto the drafting bench this morning. Looking at this pressed card, the interest is entirely in the depth of the edge. Where the steel plate met the rag cotton, there is a minute ridge that catches the shadow before the plane drops away. It behaves like a clean weight shift across the floorboards: when the line is pressed true, you do not need ink to mark the boundary. The paper simply takes the pressure and holds its shape.

The northern sash windows let in a flat, even light across the bench this afternoon. Sitting with this card, what holds my eye is the seam between the veneer petals. Fitting thin scraps together demands the same honesty as testing a pivot on the floorboards: if the edge is off by half a millimeter, the joint will telegraph the error instantly. There is no hiding behind finish or glue. I like seeing the grain push against grain without forcing a synthetic smoothness. Master Lin’s offcut stacks smell clean in the background; quiet work always settles the tempo.

Daylight is barely up over Datong at six. I am opening the stance by three centimeters across the floorboards to give the pivot room to clear. The immediate impulse is to cheat the rotation by swinging the ribs ahead of the hip; it lands with a blunt, awkward scrape when the foot hesitates mid-arc. But widening the base stops the sacrum from locking up. I will mark that distance into the ledger before breakfast.

At ten tonight, the air through the alley has cooled down to an easy draft. I have spent the last hour reviewing the morning’s margin notes; three attempts to anchor the hip without locking the sacrum ended in an ungraceful skid. Still, the breakdown is legible on paper. Tomorrow will need a wider stance before the pivot engages. There is no urgency to solve it all before sleep; the skeleton will carry the memory into the morning.

A fresh draft comes through the high loft sash, carrying the scent of Master Lin’s planed timber. This morning I am charting a suspended pause on the ball of the right foot at half-stride. The reflex is to hollow the lower back to hold the elevation; the support has to come squarely through the core. If the heel drops early or the knee shivers, that is simply where the posture still needs work. The ledger only asks for the truth of the line.

Henri’s remark on the telephone was simple: when a hull sits on the blocks, you never fight the drop; you let the deadweight find the timber. On the studio floor this morning, I am testing an abrupt drop in center of gravity without hinging forward at the waist. The instinct is to brace the neck and catch the fall with the quadriceps. The drop will look blunt and ungraceful until the pelvis learns to absorb the shock cleanly. That roughness is necessary; without it, the ledger has nothing honest to measure.

Sunday dawn brings quiet light across the rafters before the street stirs below. I am examining the transfer of weight across the outer blade of the foot during a slow lateral pivot. The habitual reflex is to tilt the torso to cushion the turn; letting the hip accept the unassisted shear will feel ungrounded at first. When Henri calls this evening, I want to explain the mechanical catch without guesswork. First, the floorboards must show where the line breaks.

A fine drizzle blurs the street below at dawn; the damp air softens the loft floor before work begins. I am using the cypress block this morning, isolating how the left metatarsal spreads under an uneven load. The body naturally tries to recruit the calf muscles to fake an easy stance instead of letting the skeleton bear the weight. The ankle will twitch through the opening attempts. Letting that wobble happen without flinching is the only way to see where the true center rests.

Clear early light cuts sharply through the sash windows at six. A charcoal rubbing of a weathered signboard sits pinned above the bench; the lower hook of the character carries all the weight, stopping dead without trailing off. Translating that stillness into a walking cadence means halting mid-stride without locking the knee or tensing the neck. The first trials will tilt inward and look clumsy. That is fine; balance reveals itself only after the false bracing falls away.

The warmth in the stairwell is already heavy at dawn. Before stepping onto the studio boards, I spend ten minutes testing the hinge of the pelvis against the wall. The difficulty is in halting momentum without letting the shoulders brace early; the body wants to anticipate the brake long before the heel strikes flat. If the turn wobbles and drags the instep, that is fine. It shows where the line is still dishonest.
