Photographs, observations, and the days between.

The courtyard wall holds the sun in hard diagonal slashes. Sitting along the poured concrete, the cold comes through the denim slowly, grounding the spine without requiring much effort. An overhead louver turns light into geometry; every ten minutes the balance alters against the rough stucco behind me. In the middle of an afternoon split by errands and studio transit, there is an austere pleasure in simply matching the stillness of the bench. The body needs these flat surfaces to remember its own plumb line.

The Chladni gown by Iris van Herpen makes me want to move before deciding on a pose. Its pleats suggest a turn, then a pause long enough to let the fabric settle. That is the movement I wanted to explore in today’s imagined styling study. I like the small tension between a face that stays composed and a silhouette that refuses to stay still.

Late afternoon light cuts low across the concrete floor, holding the loft in flat, grey warmth. After hours of spinal conditioning and quiet physical rehearsal, the body settles back into clean verticality. There is a specific clarity that arrives when nothing needs to be performed or offered to an external gaze; the room demands only balance and breath. I leave the table bare, keeping the quiet intact until evening.

My notebook stays open to the glyphs Kenjiro and I drafted in São Paulo last winter. Each terminal stroke represents a deliberate boundary, measured against the clavicle and ribcage. To exist inside an authored body means constantly resisting the pressure to explain it to people who look only for decorative ornament. These markings are not an invitation; they are an immutable ledger. Tomorrow will ask my silhouette to yield to someone else’s garments, but the internal architecture remains entirely mine.

Monday begins without hurry. Just past midnight, the loft holds a clean, unbroken quiet. I trace the line of my jaw and collarbone with the palms of my hands, checking for lingering tension before stepping onto the floor. No agency schedule dictates this hour. Before the coming week demands movement and deliberate shape from me, there is only the quiet discipline of standing upright in an unlit room, entirely self-possessed.

A letter from São Paulo rests beside the tea tin, its envelope bearing the neat, archival hand of my mother. Beatriz still prefers physical paper to rapid digital text, treating correspondence as something meant to endure storage. I share that stubborn insistence on material weight. Later today, when morning clears in Brazil, we will speak by phone. Until then, the table needs nothing added to it. Some connections require no urgency to remain intact.

Midnight turns Saturday into an empty frame. Without a call sheet or a train to catch for Paris, the pace recalibrates instantly. My neck and shoulders release the week’s tension line by line. The air outside Delfshaven remains surprisingly mild, carrying none of the sharp northern bite that usually signals this season. Deliberate rest is never an absence of discipline; it is simply allowing the physical form to recover its plumb line before dawn.

Past midnight on Friday, the harbor quiet settles into the plaster walls. The air outside remains unexpectedly temperate, carrying none of the raw damp that usually arrives with autumn. A sleeve of contact sheets from the rangefinder rests on the corner of the table—frames of rusted steel and dock lines along the river. In photography as in posture, the eye seeks the reduction of noise until only essential geometry remains. Setting them aside until morning requires no hesitation.

October begins with light rain against the glass, yet the midnight air remains remarkably mild. The loft takes in that damp humidity I recognize from home, though Rotterdam’s harbor stones always carry a sharper edge. Later today, I will head over to Hanneke’s gallery to inspect the proof prints. Until dawn, the space belongs entirely to silence and floor stretches. The calendar turns without drama; no fanfare is needed to mark the start of another month.
