After hours of holding tension—whether against rigid wool or along fragile book spines—there is immense comfort in feeling the knuckles soften and the shoulders drop. Şafakta neem tarağı ve ılık yağla geçirilecek, bu yeni mekânın kendi doğal ritmini bulmasına izin veren kırk sakin dakika yeter.

Sandığı açmadan önce pirinç kulplara ve masanın kenarlarına hafifçe gül suyu püskürttüm—buradaki hava Chicago'nun kuru ayazından biraz daha nemli olsa da alışkanlık işte. Akşamın erken saatlerinde ağartılmamış keten ipliği dümdüz serilmişti; on sekizinci yüzyıldan kalma el yapımı kâğıt da bu yolculuktan hiç etkilenmemiş gibiydi. İyi malzemelerin, onları nereye bırakırsanız bırakın, kendilerine özgü sessiz bir ağırlığı vardır.

Milano'daki havanın ağırlığı Chicago'dakinden farklı—ıslak taş, göl kıyısında ıslık çalan cereyanın yerini alıyor—ama rutin coğrafyayı pek umursamıyor. Hardal yağı bu ocakta da aynı iyi şekilde ısındı; neem tarağı da yolculukta geçen kırk dakikanın düğümünü telaşsızca çözdü. Sessiz ve istikrarlı bir başlangıç.
