The air in the flat is unusually mild for late September. With the casement pushed open, the city feels loose and unbraced, though the heavy brick sills stay cool enough to rest my forearms on. After hours under studio lights, an open window and dark timber are all that is required to reset my posture. Standing completely still, letting the room shed the day's heat, is quiet work. The walls hold their line. Tomorrow will demand its own balance.
