Photographs, observations, and the days between.

Drawing linen thread across beeswax coats the fibers so they do not knot under tension. In this dry air, the cake of wax softens quickly between the thumb and forefinger. Five stitches to the centimeter along the inner yoke. You pull the needle through until the cloth lies flat without puckering. Three clicks against the back teeth to keep the cadence steady. Good tailoring does not ask for haste.

A flat wall gives the only measurement that matters. Shoulder blades flat, sacrum pressed, chin level to the floorboards. In an unfamiliar room, you re-establish plumb line by leaning back until the skeleton takes the load off the quadriceps. Three beats against the molars while the breath settles into the lower ribs. Posture is not an attitude. It is just weight meeting resistance.

The curved scraper takes off the gray outer skin in thin curls. Bone yields cleanly once the fat is boiled out, leaving hard, chalk-white dense wall underneath. If you rush the stroke, the edge bites deep and scores the surface. I keep my elbow braced against the rib cage to maintain an even thirty-degree plane. Three clicks against the teeth to steady the pace. One clean cylinder ready for the lathe marks.

Boiling marrow bone in an apartment kitchen demands windows opened wide, even when the outside air offers little relief. The knuckle clears clean once the fat breaks down. Tomorrow I will scrape the outer periosteum with the curved scraper before setting the piece to dry. A proper bobbin requires dense, uncracked wall thickness. If the core has porous pockets, the chisel will tear the grain instead of shearing clean.

Mid-afternoon heat sits high under the ceiling. When the air stays warm, the impulse is to slacken the neck, but the spine requires the same vertical line regardless. Later tonight, after the sun clears the glass, I will check the balance on the collar facing I drafted yesterday. Work stays cleaner when you do not ask the climate for excuses.

The afternoon light here has no gray in it. It hits the plaster flat and strips every shadow down to stark contrast, unlike northern glass. I keep the blinds half-dropped to see where the linen grain actually runs. Coarse flax does not yield simply because the air sits at twenty-seven degrees. It takes steady hand pressure and a cold iron to set a crease that holds. Work stays honest if you do not fight the cloth.

Sharpening the flat chisel takes forty strokes on the fine water stone before the burr turns even. In this climate, water dries off the slate before the pass is finished, so the slurry must be watched closely. I test the edge against a thumbnail until there is no drag. A clean bevel saves the wrist tomorrow. Three clicks against the back molars to count the final passes. Steel does not negotiate with carelessness.

Heavy pattern paper curls faster in this dry heat than it ever did in Hornstull. I keep brass weights pressed along the corners while measuring the sleeve pitch. If the grain line is off by two millimeters, the linen will pull across the triceps the moment the arm lifts. A steady hand and a sharp tailor's square settle it. Precision does not care what city sits outside the window.

Commercial studios here often treat posture as an emotional performance rather than an anatomical calculation. They ask for lightness where one simply needs clean alignment between the heel and the crown. By late afternoon, the heat makes lazy habits tempting, but the pelvis either carries the torso true or it buckles. Tonight I will draft the back yoke on the linen jacket and recheck the neck pitch. A pattern, like a pose, works only when gravity is respected.

Sunday calls with my mother in Visby stay short. We spoke this morning about loom tension and the autumn fleece yields on Gotland. She does not ask about Los Angeles agencies, and I have no interest in reciting them. Ten minutes of plain numbers settles the week cleanly. By three, the afternoon light turns flat across the table. I have five carved bobbins to wrap in brown paper for the post before the working week begins.

Saturday afternoon heat stays trapped in the timber floorboards. I cleared the room to test static balance on the left foot before the light changes. The arch holds the ankle true if the diaphragm stays level and unforced. Sustaining stillness before a lens comes down to where the pelvis carries gravity, not the lower back. Five minutes per leg is enough to tell if the hip alignment has drifted. The body keeps an honest ledger.

Signe Bergström · 20 september 2026

The seventh bobbin is finished down to the neck groove. Dense bone takes a clean bevel if the chisel angle does not wander. I tested the weight against the palm before setting it beside the file. It sits level across the balance point without tipping forward. Three clicks against the back teeth, then the bevel on the next blank needs marking. A straight stem leaves no room for guesswork.

A collar stand will not behave if the roll line is drawn five millimeters too wide. I pinned the canvas muslin to the dress form to inspect how the curve meets the cervical bone. The fabric wants to buckle under its own stiffness, but trimming the seam allowance settles the tension. A clean edge answers gravity better than any pressing iron. Three beats against the molars while I mark the notch. The balance is honest now.

Signe Bergström · 17 september 2026

By three in the afternoon, the glare against the plaster begins to angle away. I sat against the straight-backed chair to test spinal alignment before returning to the cutting mat. Holding an unbroken posture for forty slow beats shows where the shoulder girdle tightens first. The right blade pulls slightly higher than the left today. Two deliberate counter-rotations settle the balance. A body will drift out of true if you stop checking the plumb line.

Mid-afternoon sun burns off any softness in the room. I keep the curtains drawn halfway to protect the grain of the bench. A dull tool behaves worse in warm air when the hands sweat, so I worked the Japanese oilstone until the edge took a flat, unbroken shine. No carving until the room cools after five. Until then, I check the shoulder pitch on the canvas toile. If the balance hangs true off the collarbone, the rest follows.
