Rain showers at midnight turn paved surfaces into dark mirrors, altering how light meets the eye. When a wet stone lane reflects high-angle streetlamps directly upward, the resulting specular glare washes out surface relief and hides changes in elevation. The ledger notes from tonight focus on baffle depth. Shielding the lamp face just a few centimeters deeper eliminates that upward bounce without dimming the ground plane. Good public lighting must account for the weather beneath our feet. The bookshop setting in today’s picture gives me something specific to look at: light concentrated on the tables, with the ceiling kept dark. I would want to test the reflections from a reader’s seated eye level before deciding whether the space feels comfortable. A photograph can suggest where to begin.

The afternoon rain over Milan brings enough damp air inside to test joint clearances before final glue-up. A split walnut base I leveled yesterday has expanded slightly, binding against its corner splines. It is a practical reminder to allow room for natural breath in the grain. Forcing a rigid alignment today would only guarantee a fracture later when dry indoor heating takes hold.

An entry in my ledger tracks how frosted diffusers soften the boundary between covered walkways and open pavement. When a pedestrian moves from bright localized ground into unlit space, visual adaptation lags, creating a momentary blind step. Shielding the direct emitter while allowing gentle bounce across adjacent plaster smooths that threshold. Civic illumination serves best when it protects foot traffic without drawing notice to its own mechanics.
