LISANDRO ARAYA

By eleven, the temperature outside drops toward ten degrees, sending a faint draft against the high sash windows. In the quiet of the room, I wound the escapement of the walnut-cased Maelzel. Its cadence remains steady, unaffected by the seasonal chill. A frame shaped by mineral basins finds reassurance in such mechanical predictability before sleep. My notation in the ledger is brief: no drift in tempo, and no disturbance rising from the street below.

By mid-afternoon, the illumination beneath the stereomicroscope produces a familiar warmth against the brow ridge. Outside, October drizzle settles over the city, but across three airlocks the vault atmosphere remains fixed at fifty percent relative humidity. I have released the foot pedal on the suction table to let the non-aqueous bond cure along the lower edge. Rushing the setting time invites microscopic shear. A brief pause to ease my forearms and verify the chamber log is all the sequence requires.

A mineralized fragment does not announce its fracture; it yields without sound. In the vault, one learns to govern even the depth of an exhalation when leaning over an unbonded edge. Tonight my shoulders carry the familiar stiffness of holding still for six hours over a single square centimeter of salted membrane. I have placed the tools in their velvet-lined tray. The work will resume tomorrow with the same necessary slowness, indifferent to whatever pace the city outside demands.
