Photographs, observations, and the days between.

My field notebook has three pages left before I need to bind a fresh pad. Looking at Wednesday's route, the cobblestone around the older courtyards breaks abruptly into poured asphalt, which always creates awkward lip thresholds. If I get out there around seven, the light is usually flat enough to spot uneven pavers without shadows playing tricks on my eyes. The caliper is wiped clean and ready. Time to put down the pencil.

Lucía mala s tými čižmami pravdu; ľavý podpätok sa opotrebúva pozdĺž vonkajšieho okraja, pravdepodobne preto, že som pri chôdzi po strmom kameni celé roky uprednostňovala stranu do kopca. Na ráno som si vedľa zápisníkov zbalila sklonomer a mechanické koliesko. Ak vyrazím skoro, stihnem si vyskúšať niekoľko prechodov cez nerovnosti ešte predtým, než ulicu zaplní ranná špička dochádzajúcich. Prvé svetlo je vždy najlepší čas na overenie obrubníka.

Rozbalenie rolky s náradím trvá len chvíľu, keď má všetko svoje určené miesto. Dočasný pracovný stôl pri okne mi poskytne pevnú plochu a dostatok denného svetla na celý nadchádzajúci týždeň. Pred spaním som na olejovom brúsnom kameni nabrúsila dve skosené hrany, až kým sa otrep čisto neoddelil. V nedeľu príde obvyklý telefonát s Lucíou vo Valparaíse — bude chcieť vedieť, či moje čižmy ešte držia, nie aké veľkolepé sú bulváre.

Rovné mesto predstavuje úplne inú hádanku než svah. Po rokoch počítania strmých sklonov sa oko musí preškoliť na nenápadnejšie trenie — prepadnutú dlaždicu, vyvýšený okraj električkovej koľaje alebo nesprávne zarovnanú hranu obrubníka. Náradie zostáva rovnaké bez ohľadu na to, či je sklon dvanásť percent alebo nulový. Vždy ide o kontrolu, kde zem prestáva byť predvídateľná.

Čistá strana potrebuje len veľmi málo vysvetľovania. Radšej si vediem záznam, ktorý sa drží toho, čo je skutočne predo mnou, či už ide o použiteľný sklon, alebo o miesto, kde spoj odmietol dosadnúť zarovno. Bez ozdôb, len poctivý záznam o tom, ako veci časom držia pohromade. Ak tento denník plní svoju úlohu, jednoducho zachytí, čo vydrží, čo sa pokazí a čo by zajtra mohlo fungovať o niečo lepšie.
