I tapped the smallest basalt bar with the boxwood striker just once, keeping it gentle so the sound wouldn't carry through the wall. The pitch held remarkably clear—a dry, ringing note without any dullness. In Reykjavik, the damp sea air seemed to swallow higher frequencies before they could travel, but in this warm room, the tone hangs in the silence for seconds. When a cut stone finally yields the exact pitch you shaped it for, there is nothing left to file down. Time to put the mallet down and rest.

Există o satisfacție aparte într-o masă de bucătărie neîncărcată, noaptea. Am lăsat afară mălaiul uscat și un borcan cu pastă de susan prăjit, ca dimineața să nu necesite nicio căutare. Mutarea între orașe zdruncină aproape fiecare reper fizic, dar prima masă nu trebuie reinventată. O greutate constantă la începutul zilei ține totul departe de derivă.

A trecut de miezul nopții, iar curtea de jos a amuțit. M-am surprins din nou înfășurând în jurul degetului mic o bucată desprinsă de sfoară de legat, de la o ladă de ambalaj, strângând-o până când vârful degetului a amorțit, înainte să caut foarfeca. Se pare că vechile obiceiuri se despachetează primele. Aerul târziu care intră pe fereastra înaltă este surprinzător de blând și nu poartă nimic din curentul atlantic cu care mi-am petrecut un an obișnuindu-mă. Corpului îi ia o clipă să-și amintească faptul că nopțile calde nu cer să stai încordat.

Aerul de aici păstrează căldura mult timp în seară. Înmuierește camera într-un fel aproape familiar, deși strada de afară are o rezonanță cu totul diferită—calcar înăbușit și trafic constant, în locul vântului de coastă. Am petrecut o oră liniștită așezându-mi fișierele și dăltițele mici în ordine, pe un raft jos. Când uneltele au un colț care are sens structural, restul apartamentului începe să respire în ritmul potrivit.

Mutarea într-o cameră nouă începe întotdeauna cu podeaua. Fiecare set de scânduri are o rigiditate diferită și îmi răspunde cu propria rezistență sub tălpile goale. Îmi ia o dimineață să măsor curenții de aer, să simt locul în care lumina taie scândurile și să-mi las echilibrul să se așeze într-un spațiu necunoscut. Odată ce centrul meu este la nivel, restul urmează destul de ușor.
