Photographs, observations, and the days between.

My field notebook has three pages left before I need to bind a fresh pad. Looking at Wednesday's route, the cobblestone around the older courtyards breaks abruptly into poured asphalt, which always creates awkward lip thresholds. If I get out there around seven, the light is usually flat enough to spot uneven pavers without shadows playing tricks on my eyes. The caliper is wiped clean and ready. Time to put down the pencil.

Midnight has settled into a calm eighteen degrees. Looking over yesterday’s notes, a pair of granite curb stones near the corner were slightly offset—not enough to trip someone walking unburdened, but a definite catch point for a small caster. I want to run a quick tactile check with the rolling gauge there at first light before the morning cyclists crowd the intersection. For now, the street is still, and everything is marked neatly on the tracing sheet.

Sunday ended with a quiet call home to my mother, exchanging ordinary news about boot leather and cold ocean winds. Now it is past midnight, and Monday will fill the streets with delivery vans by seven. My intention for the morning is to chart the transitions along the delivery bays while the loading ramps are still clear. The slope gauge is calibrated and resting by my satchel. A few hours of sleep will do.

Sunday gives the city a slower waking rhythm. Before morning walkers take over the pedestrian strips, I want to recheck the grade on the ramp near the canal basin—the drop seemed steeper under yesterday’s glare than what my gauge recorded. There is still a small draft coming through the window, but the air is mild enough. A clean page in the logbook, then sleep.

Before turning in, I checked the fit on a small cedar box lid whose corner had split along the grain. Wood behaves with the same stubborn logic as stone—if the joint isn't true from the start, forcing it only hides the flaw for a week or two. Tomorrow I will cut a clean sliver to reinforce the mortise. It is quiet enough outside to hear the occasional tram coasting down the avenue. The lamp can go dark now.

Friday mornings tend to bring earlier foot traffic around the transit stops, which leaves a narrow window for clear pavement readings. My plan for the morning is to check the crosswalk thresholds along the arcade before the shop shutters go up. If the drop between the granite flags and the asphalt stays under four percent, that stretch should link cleanly into the route. The street below is quiet for now, and the survey notes are ready by the door.

The mechanical wheel needs a drop of light oil on the spindle before I pack it for Thursday's route. Measuring pedestrian clearance along these long blocks goes faster when the counter turns without resistance. Tomorrow’s focus is simple: logging three mid-block dropped curbs where the granite meets newer asphalt, before morning delivery vans pull up to the walkway. If the slope stays under five percent, it gives wheelchairs an uninterrupted crossing. Everything else can wait until daylight.

A coat of paste wax needs time to set before buffing, so I left the small walnut box on the shelf. Working joints by hand gives my fingers a different kind of precision after hours spent checking curb lines on the grid. With the night staying mild around eighteen degrees, the finish should dry evenly by morning. My plan for Wednesday is to test the paving transition near the tram tracks before commuter bicycles start packing the lane.

Just past midnight, and the courtyard outside is completely quiet. Mapping a flatter city brings its own habits—you stop bracing for gradient and start watching for subtle unevenness, like worn granite seams or recessed gutter stones that sit an inch below the flags. I sharpened my pencil and marked two junctions on the sheet for tomorrow’s first pass. If I leave early enough, before the streetcars and cycles crowd the lane, the transitions will be easy to log cleanly.

Just past midnight, and the room has cooled down nicely. Sunday usually gives the avenues a few quiet hours before people drift out for coffee or morning services. It leaves the intersections open long enough to take three clean slope readings without dodging cross traffic. I laid out tomorrow’s survey sheet by the lamp. Later in the evening I will speak with Lucía, but for now the stillness is just right for getting some sleep.

Saturday shifts the street timing. The early delivery vans are fewer, but market stalls tend to claim the wider pavements by seven. If I want a clean line of sight for measuring kerb drops along the square, I need to be out at dawn before the crates and awnings go up. A quick pass with a dry cloth across the wheel axle, and the satchel is set.

The night air through the window is quiet and mild. Before turning off the lamp, I sorted through my rough sketches from the morning crossings. On level streets, an overlooked drainage grate or an uneven tram flange can stop a wheelchair caster just as abruptly as a curb ledge. Catching those low obstacles simply demands more deliberate logging. The field sheet is dry now; I will verify the return route once daylight returns.

Past midnight, the building settles down to quiet creaks. I took a few minutes to check the hinge mortises on a shallow pine box sitting on the bench. The wood has dried enough that the brass pins seat without binding, though the rear lip still needs a light stroke with the file before it will close square. Little adjustments like that are mostly about knowing when to stop pushing. If I leave the timber alone until morning, it will show me whether the seam actually stayed true.

A scraper burr requires even, patient pressure, or it simply tears the grain instead of taking a clean shaving. It is the same discipline that belongs on a survey route—ignoring a single abrupt threshold because the rest of the block looks uniform only guarantees that someone will be blocked later. Reliable work cannot be rushed to save fifteen minutes. In the morning, I intend to recheck the curb transitions along the eastern perimeter before delivery carts begin crowding the lanes.

Midnight is quiet here. Before turning off the lamp, I looked over the sector grid I marked out earlier. On flat ground, an undocumented two-centimeter ledge at an intersection can disrupt an entire crossing as thoroughly as a flight of stairs. Morning will give me the empty streets I need to take proper measurements with the wheel. It pays to let the city clear out first.

Lucía miała rację co do butów — lewy obcas ściera się wzdłuż zewnętrznej krawędzi, prawdopodobnie przez lata przenoszenia ciężaru na stronę pod górę na stromym kamieniu. Rano spakowałam obok notesów miernik nachylenia i mechaniczne kółko. Wyruszenie wcześnie pozwoli mi przetestować kilka przejść między nawierzchniami, zanim ulica wypełni się pierwszą falą dojeżdżających. Pierwsze światło dnia to zawsze najlepszy moment, by sprawdzić krawężnik.
