Tidlig på kvelden ligger den ublekede linsytråden rett, og papiret av fillemasse fra 1700-tallet virker fullstendig uberørt av reisen. Gode materialer bærer sin egen stille tyngde uansett hvor du plasserer dem.

Nye rom, og det første som alltid må gjøres, er det samme: finne en plan flate til bokbinderpressen og sette en liten flaske rosevann ved messinghaspen. Luften i Milano har en annen tyngde enn i Chicago – fuktig stein i stedet for den plystrende trekken fra innsjøen – men rutinen bryr seg lite om geografi. Sennepsoljen ble varmet opp like godt på denne komfyren, og neemkammen løste opp førti minutters reise uten noe oppstyr. En rolig og stødig begynnelse.

Ingen storslagne hensikter her – bare en ærlig nedtegnelse av arbeidet, materialene og det som holder føttene mine på gulvet.
