A light rain has picked up outside the window, cooling Milan down to seventeen degrees while the apartment sits completely still. I caught myself pacing the short strip between the hallway and the worktable again—just burning off nervous momentum because the calves refuse to switch off. Thursday brings high-cadence reps at dawn, the kind where any hesitation on the third bend costs meters you can never buy back. Everything is packed. Now the only useful task left is teaching the engine how to idle.

Fatigue is useful because it removes all the pretense from a stride. When the legs are fresh, you can disguise sloppy hip drive with sheer power, but after a hard block, every fraction of lost momentum shows up immediately on the ledger. It’s no different than a gear train with dry jewel bearings—friction always collects its tax. I stretched out on the rug, noting where the calves caught on the foam roller. The numbers don't ask for apologies; they just ask for cleaner mechanics tomorrow.

Midnight clicks in, resetting the ledger for Monday. After a day of forced conservation, the body carries too much stored torque and zero interest in sleep. My spikes are double-checked, but my fingers still itch to strip down a stubborn barrel arbor just to quiet the idle hum. Five hours until track work. The objective tomorrow isn't brute force; it’s holding a clean line when the fourth lap tries to unravel the form.
