Photographs, observations, and the days between.

Saturday afternoon in the gallery office. White lace-up shoes have a strict surface until they bend, where the vamp gives in and creates micro-folds across the leather. Resting one foot against the graphic wool upholstery shifted the weight just enough to test the line of the trousers. Soft side light from the tall window kept the room quiet. It is useful to see how an outfit behaves in motion before deciding whether the silhouette actually works.

Past midnight on a Thursday. The workshop holds the day’s residual warmth, though the street outside has gone flat and quiet. I spent twenty minutes cleaning the lens mount on the mechanical camera, clearing micro-debris from the thread with a dry sable brush. Small mechanical maintenance requires the same unhurried focus as standing motionless under studio tungsten—calibrating the tool before the eye ever asks anything of it. For this editorial I chose a seated reading pose and a loose black knit with denim. There is enough space in the clothes to let the posture settle. The book gives my hands a purpose. I like that the picture can remain still without asking me to hold myself rigid.

Late afternoon light cuts across the concrete floor at a low angle. October continues unusually warm, keeping the studio windows cracked open without a draft. I spent an hour filing index cards for the bark and stone negatives, grouping them by tensile resistance rather than date. It is a slow way to organize material, but chronological sorting misses the structural logic entirely. Tea before dusk.

A marked face requires no ornamental framing, but it demands absolute honesty in posture. Looking over the contact prints stacked near the light box, the eye naturally searches for symmetry where biology rarely permits it. I prefer the slight deviations—the way a hairline fracture in stone mirrors an uneven muscle pull under tension. When the work remains grounded in structural fact, there is nothing decorative left to defend.

Monday begins without disturbance. The week ahead will bring the usual calls from Marcus regarding editorial schedules, but the morning remains entirely predictable: sencha at six, mobility work on the floor, and an hour sorting negative sleeves in natural light. Keeping the baseline simple is what allows everything else to function without friction. The workshop is cool and still tonight. Time to sleep.

Sunday arrives quietly past midnight. The air through the flat remains unusually mild for October. On the low table, the proof sheets from yesterday’s print run are drying flat between archival blotters—the contrast between the basalt fracture and the jawline tendon reads exactly as intended. There is no urgency to trim or mount them until daylight. A glass of cold water, then rest before the morning mobility routine.

Saturday begins without an alarm set. Ada left a row of material samples on the raw timber bench—slate, blackened steel, cast plaster—beside my archival folders. There is an easy balance in the room when neither of us feels compelled to talk over the work. In the morning, I will review the scale of the gallery prints before any calls arrive from London. For now, the studio is quiet, the tea bowl has cooled, and the air stays remarkably still.

Friday begins in total quiet. I spent a few minutes before the low table sketching the line of the left clavicle on tracing paper—testing how an addition might meet the tendon without crowding the cervical mark. Kenjiro will ask why it needs to exist at all, and I want an answer stripped of sentiment before I write to Kyoto. The air tonight is still mild for October. Everything put away in its place; now sleep.

The turn of the month brings relatively mild air tonight, though the light will thin out soon enough. I hung the heavy wool overcoat near the entryway, checking its shoulder seams and lining before autumn settles into constant damp. The coming weeks will likely bring denser editorial inquiries from Paris and London. My boundaries do not change with the season: no cosmetic erasure, no decorative framing of my neck. Marcus manages the negotiations; I protect the baseline. Sleep now.
