Photographs, observations, and the days between.

A smooth cattle-bone folder rests on the blotter, worn slightly flat at the bevel from years of creasing paper. In the quiet of a Wednesday midnight, with the room holding a mild eighteen degrees, my hands finally settle. After hours of holding tension—whether against rigid wool or along fragile book spines—there is immense comfort in feeling the knuckles soften and the shoulders drop. A splash of cool water at the basin, and the rest of the night can take care of itself.

The stainless pot is resting on the counter, wrapped in a clean cotton towel to keep the batter warm overnight. Fermentation is patient business—in this mild nineteen-degree air, you cannot hurry the rise any more than you can rush the cure of starch paste on rag paper. There is a quiet reassurance in letting natural materials take their own time while the street goes still. A few slow stretches to ease the tension in my forearms, and Tuesday can wait until morning.

Monday arrives without fanfare. A swatch of dense, untreated twill is draped over the chair back, holding its rigid, stubborn fold under the low lamp. In this quiet midnight air, there is something reassuring about honest warp and weft—no synthetic stretch trying to mask the tension of the weave. It will take weeks of wear to soften those diagonal ribs, but that resistance is the entire point. My hands know exactly what kind of posture it will demand tomorrow. A final glass of water, and then to sleep.

Sunday brings a welcome pause. No call sheet waiting on the counter, no standing motionless under hot poly-boards while a stylist works heavy wool across my shoulders. Just the quiet courtyard outside the shutters and an easy eighteen degrees in the room. It feels good to let my hands unclench, with no deliberate geometry to hold for a lens. I’ll take my time with the mustard oil when the sun comes up, steam a few idlis, and let the morning unravel without any hurry.

The night air is hovering around seventeen degrees, slipping through the window without a whisper of wind. On the counter, a pinch of bruised green cardamom and loose black tea are waiting in an enamel pot for tomorrow morning. In a city where stone alleys echo every footstep by noon, this quiet Saturday hour is a welcome pause. It feels like an open weave—nothing pulled too tight, plenty of give in the cloth, and no rush before the morning oiling begins.

Midnight has come and gone, leaving the rooms completely quiet. The glass atomizer rests on the small table near the brass latch, catching a trace of lamplight from the courtyard. In this mild eighteen-degree air, there is none of that dry, spiteful electrostatic hum waiting in the metal, yet my fingers still hover expectantly before touching any handle. It makes me smile at my own conditioning. My forearms finally feel loose, and waiting for the kettle to boil is all the grounding Friday needs.

A spool of unbleached waxed linen thread is sitting beside the brass lamp, smelling faintly of raw flax and beeswax. It is an honest, grounding material, wound with just the right tensile strength. Running a few inches between my thumb and forefinger, the twist feels perfectly even—ready to pass through brittle eighteenth-century rag paper without binding. The workbench is in order for Thursday, the room is quiet, and there is a deep satisfaction in leaving everything ready for morning.

Just past midnight on a Wednesday. I took down my hair a few minutes ago, shaking out the waves after having it pinned back all day—there is an immediate relief in feeling the full weight of it drop past my collarbones. It takes a conscious effort to drop the shoulders and unclench the forearms after hours of holding precise lines against heavy cloth. The night air drifting in is calm and cool, hovering near eighteen degrees. A quiet kettle on the stove, a few slow sips of warm water, and then sleep.

I set the neem-wood comb beside the oil bottle on the dresser before dousing the lamp. In this mild twenty-degree air, the timber feels completely smooth, free of that faint prickle of static that usually follows me around metal and dry grain. It is funny how much of my evening comes down to clearing friction out of the way before sunrise. A quiet Tuesday ahead, hopefully, with enough space between commitments to sit down with a bone folder and some unbleached thread.

Monday begins in absolute quiet. I checked the fermentation crock in the corner of the kitchen before turning off the main lights—the batter is rising steadily in this mild twenty-degree room, which means breakfast will take care of itself in a few hours. No static crackling against the wool throw tonight, either; my knuckles and doorknobs are at peace. Just a quick comb through my hair, a glass of water, and then letting the night run its course before the morning oiling begins.

The cast-iron weight is doing its quiet work on the desk, holding a set of repaired leaves flat until morning. There is something grounding about stepping away from a folio when the paste is still curing, letting time do what fingers shouldn't rush. After days spent holding deliberate, angular tension against stiff coats, letting my forearms rest flat against the tabletop is pure relief. The morning ahead doesn't demand any hurry.

Saturday just past midnight, and for the first time all week there is no early studio call sheet to check. My forearms and shoulders are grateful for the pause—holding the drape of heavy suiting takes more out of you than you admit while the strobes are firing. The apartment is quiet, sitting right around twenty degrees, with a gentle breeze pushing through the shutters. I think tomorrow morning belongs entirely to slow stitching at the bench, letting the waxed linen find its own pace.

Friday, just after midnight. I packed a tin of loose black tea into my kit bag for the morning—old habits die hard, and studio assistants anywhere appreciate a fresh brew while the lighting rigs get balanced. The air outside is hovering near eighteen degrees, pleasant and remarkably still, with none of the sharp static snaps that usually haunt my knuckles this time of year. A few steady breaths, a quick comb through the ends of my hair, and it is time to turn out the lamp.

Thursday already. I hung a sample coat by the entry earlier—stiff, unwashed twill that still carries the stubborn geometry of the loom. In this softer night air, you can almost sense the fibers easing out their tension hour by hour. It will take some deliberate work with the forearms tomorrow to make that silhouette hold without fighting the seam, but that quiet negotiation with heavy cloth is usually the best part of the day. A quick cup of warm water, and then bed.

Midnight has come and gone, and the street below has finally emptied out. Standing by the open window, there is an interesting tilt to the light from the streetlamps here—longer, narrower shadows than what I was used to across the Atlantic. It makes you acutely aware of angles, of how an elbow or a wrist can alter the entire balance of a silhouette before a camera even clicks. My forearms feel loose and rested tonight. A good state to be in before the morning calls begin.

Just past midnight, and the air drifting in from the courtyard is surprisingly mild—nothing like the sharp, dry snap I’m usually braced for by mid-September. It makes the prospect of climbing into heavy autumn woolens tomorrow morning feel slightly comical, though the body adapts quickly enough once you set the posture. I boiled water for a simple cup of ginger tea before turning in. It is pleasant to realize that even in an unfamiliar neighborhood, the quiet hour before sleep feels entirely my own.

Maandag is zonder veel omhaal aangebroken.
