Photographs, observations, and the days between.

Stopping outside the bookshop passage where the brickwork catches the morning light. The poster paste has dried rough against the masonry, leaving tiny ridges along the paper where ink and grain meet. Seeing print work treated as architecture rather than a delicate sheet on a drying rack always makes me slow down. The scale does something honest to the lines—bold, heavy contrast made to withstand weather and passing shoulders. Stood there for a few minutes just letting the air circulate before moving on.

Tapping the edge of a carved basalt chime with the small wooden mallet just to check its pitch. In a room with plaster and higher ceilings, the sound doesn't absorb as quickly as it did back in the basement flat; the note holds, ringing clean and dry for several seconds before falling off. It’s strange how much the volume of empty air changes the weight of a strike. A satisfying frequency to leave in the dark before turning in.

Caught myself standing by the window with a length of dark basting thread wrapped three times around my pinky finger, pulled tight enough to turn the nail bed pale. It’s a mindless reflex that happens whenever I’m turning an idea over—suddenly the hand wants resistance, and then I’m hunting across the sill for snips with one hand. Cut it loose, shook out the knuckle, and had to laugh at how persistent the habit is. Always testing tension, even when there’s nothing to measure.

Stepping onto the bare parquet barefoot. The floor here lacks the biting chill I grew accustomed to on northern timber, but thirty minutes of breathwork still demands the exact same alignment. Arches pressed flat into the wood, collarbones wide, drawing each breath low until the ribs expand evenly without catching in the lower back. When the body finds its level, you don't have to force stillness—it simply settles in.

Monday begins quietly. At midnight, checking over the layout of the worktable—files wiped clean and resting beside scrap linen. In a few hours, the demands on the body return: finding clean counterweights under heavy wool and bright lamps. But right now, there is only the steady balance of an empty room. Letting my breath slow down until my chest settles completely.

Sunday arrives without the clockwork of a call sheet. Just past midnight, the street below goes still in a way that feels unhurried rather than hollow. I set out the small pot and a scoop of ground maize by the stove, next to the sesame paste, so morning requires no decisions. When there is no frame to anchor or joint to lock into counterbalance, you realize how much work the spine does simply waiting for direction. A rare luxury to just let it rest.

Folding a letter to post back to Maputo. Writing to my old printmaking tutor always forces an honest audit of what the hands have actually touched this month. It is easy to describe the physical work on set—the way a heavy coat pulls across the collarbones—but he always wants to know if I am still carving true planes. Sealing the fold and leaving it by the door for the morning. A quiet way to step into Saturday.

Undoing the tie and letting my dreadlocks drop loose past my collarbones shifts the center of gravity just enough to notice. You carry a subtle tension in the upper spine all day without registering it until the weight redistributes. Shaking them out, feeling the room’s cool draft catch the back of my neck. A long, unhurried exhale to empty the ribs, letting the heels take the full balance. A clean end to the week.

A light rain started outside just past midnight, tapping steadily against the zinc sill. In Reykjavik, autumn rain always arrived with a bite that made your shoulders climb toward your ears before you could catch yourself. Here, the air coming through the cracked window is surprisingly mild, carrying only the clean smell of wet pavement. There is no need to guard against it or tense the neck. Just listening to the drops land, letting the ribs expand fully before turning out the lamp.
