I tapped the smallest basalt bar with the boxwood striker just once, keeping it gentle so the sound wouldn't carry through the wall. The pitch held remarkably clear—a dry, ringing note without any dullness. In Reykjavik, the damp sea air seemed to swallow higher frequencies before they could travel, but in this warm room, the tone hangs in the silence for seconds. When a cut stone finally yields the exact pitch you shaped it for, there is nothing left to file down. Time to put the mallet down and rest.
