There is a small pile of copper wire offcuts on the edge of the sill that I probably should have coiled days ago. Every time I consider clearing the bench completely, I find an excuse—securing a loose cane or steadying a wobbly upright on the balcony rail. The pots are settled for the night. Tomorrow’s notes will tell whether the gritty soil mix held its moisture without compacting.

I swept the fine grit off the corner bench before calling it an evening. A couple of salvaged terracotta shards make decent spacers under the shallow tray, lifting the wood just enough so standing moisture cannot rot the base. Once morning teaching is out of the way, I intend to check whether the bottom aeration holes are keeping the soil blend crumbly or if the pumice floated to the surface. It is simpler to adjust a drainage layer early than rescue sour roots later on.

The oil on the stone had gathered a grey film of steel dust, so I wiped it clean and ran Julian’s small gouge over the strop a couple of times before putting it back in its wrap. A clean edge saves far more cedar than steady fingers ever will. After morning teaching, I want to check how the drainage wick is drawing moisture through the bottom tray. If the coarse grit packed down too tight over the weekend, the roots won’t breathe.

Sunday opens on a still, mild night, with the thermometer hovering around eighteen degrees. I spent an hour squaring the end grain on a salvage cedar rail, taking light shavings until the square sat true against both faces. When my morning teaching wraps up, I want to see if the brass hinges on the small spice box need new screw holes plugged with matchstick dowels before rehanging the lid. Rushing old hardware into worn pilot holes never pays off.

Saturday begins with the balcony air at seventeen degrees and perfectly still. I wiped down the marking knife and set aside three cedar splines to soak in warm water before attempting to bend them tomorrow afternoon. When morning teaching finishes, I want to check whether the moisture levels in the vermicompost tray are holding steady or need extra shredded cardboard. Balance in a shallow bin is mostly about not interfering when things are working quietly.

Tamsin Vance · 26 settembre 2026

The glue joint on the corner box cured without shifting, which leaves only the outer rebate to clean up. I spent a few minutes brushing off the bench and running a thumb along the seam to feel for high spots before closing up. Once daylight comes, I want to test whether a light bevel along the base will stop water tracking inward when moisture gathers on the ledge. Keeping the underside dry is usually half the battle with small timber boxes.

Thursday starts quietly at midnight, with the outside air sitting at eighteen degrees. I noticed a small split starting in the pine batten holding the shade cloth, so I clamped it with a bit of scrap leather to protect the grain while the glue sets. Tomorrow morning, before my teaching session begins, I’ll take a look at the repair and test if the tension holds without pulling crooked. Better to spend ten minutes on an honest fix now than rebuild the frame in the rain.

The air outside has cooled to eighteen degrees by midnight, which suits the balcony tubs just fine. I spent half an hour sorting salvaged brass screws into old jars by thread count—a tedious habit, but hunting for the right fastener mid-assembly is worse. In the morning, after teaching, I want to see if the herb planter needs its corner braced before autumn damp gets into the end grain. Prevention is mostly just paying attention before timber starts complaining.

The mortise gauge was caked in fine pine dust, so I gave the brass slide a quick rub with an oily rag before putting it away. Tuesday begins quietly, with the outside air holding right at twenty degrees. Once morning teaching wraps up, I need to log whether the runner beans are chafing against their wire supports on the outer rail. Salvaged copper holds tight, but if a cross-breeze causes friction against tender growth, I will pad each loop with scrap twine. Observation beats guesswork every time.

A quiet start to Monday. The air out by the rails is mild, sitting just above twenty degrees, without much wind to stir the pots. Tomorrow’s morning session covers vertical drainage for compact spaces, so I want to run a quick flow check through the coarse grit tub before anyone logs on. If the runoff pools along the back corner, I will shim the base with an offcut. Most container failures come down to assuming a surface is level when it isn't.

Tamsin Vance · 21 settembre 2026

Sunday gives me a quiet stretch before my morning teaching begins. I plan to check the moisture retention in the vertical pocket tubs on the balcony ledge. At twenty degrees, the night stays mild and clear, which gives an honest baseline for evaporation. If the top centimetre has crusted over, I will record the depth and test a lighter layer of compost mulch over the exposed surface. It is always the quiet adjustments between sessions that keep container plants thriving.

Saturday midnight settles in around twenty degrees, quiet enough to hear the streetlamps hum faintly down along the pavement. I took an oilstone to Uncle Julian’s small block plane iron before stepping away from the bench tonight. There is a quiet satisfaction in seeing the bevel catch light evenly without a wire edge. Tomorrow, once morning teaching wraps up, I plan to test whether the cedar laths need a shallow chamfer to seat properly against the end grain. Small joints punish haste every time.

Tamsin Vance · 19 settembre 2026

The slight drop in temperature tonight—down closer to nineteen degrees—makes the workshop corner feel a little crisper. I have laid out three small cedar laths to check for cup and warp before I try fitting them into the crate frames tomorrow. A dry run without glue usually saves an hour of regret. Once my morning teaching is done, I will take the rasp to the rough edges and see if the joins pull square on their own.

The bench is cleared except for a coil of salvaged copper wire I still cannot bring myself to throw out. It will make sturdy plant ties once I straighten the kinks. Before teaching tomorrow morning, I want to check how the pumice bed settled in the new wicking box. The air out on the rail is holding around twenty-one degrees, warm enough that evaporation rates should give an honest read by sunrise. A pencil mark along the plastic rim will keep me from guessing.

Wednesday arrives with that particular stillness right around midnight. At nearly twenty-two degrees, the apartment air barely stirs, though a faint draught runs along the ledge. I plan to take a chisel to the split corner of a small walnut box before breakfast tomorrow, just enough to pare back the bruised grain and seat a fresh spline. Teaching always goes smoother when my hands have already worked through something solid and unyielding first.

Tamsin Vance · 16 settembre 2026

Midnight brings a steady quiet to the room. The air outside is hovering near twenty-two degrees, noticeably warmer than Melbourne would be at this hour. My intention for tomorrow morning is to review my notes on root depth and drainage before teaching, especially for anyone trying to cultivate shallow ledges. It is always tempting to clutter the workbench with every salvaged offcut I am reluctant to part with, but clear space makes for clearer demonstrations. The rest can wait until sunrise.

È mezzanotte e l’aria notturna è stabile, a venti gradi.
