Photographs, observations, and the days between.

Balancing barefoot on wooden dowels strips away whatever compensations crept in during the day. If an ankle tilts inward by half a degree, the cylinder rolls out from under the arch. There is no negotiating with turned wood: either the weight drops cleanly through the shins to the heels, or the balance breaks. Twenty minutes of quiet alignment does what no posture coach can: it forces the skeleton back into neutral, completely plumb.

When an idea requires working out, standing still only clutters the mind. Pacing a wide circuit around the room—from the table corner past the doorway and back—clears the interference. Parquet boards flex slightly under bare heels, each circuit tracing an eccentric oval across the floor. The rhythm does not rush; it simply keeps the skeleton mobile while the brain tests an angle or weighs the drop of tomorrow’s canvas. Thought, like cloth, settles into shape only when there is space to move through it.

Standing motionless for two hours under pins teaches the spine how to divide weight. If you shift even three millimeters onto the left heel, the entire drop of an overcoat changes: the hem kicks outward, the vents part, and the master cutter thinks the pattern is flawed. They look for the error in the paper drafting, but the fault is purely somatic. The body is the only true plumb line in the room, and keeping it neutral is harder labor than lifting.

A jacket on a wooden hanger easily conceals its structural faults. Suspended in midair, the front panels hang plumb, offering a tidy, unearned symmetry. The truth only shows itself when cloth meets the forward pitch of a clavicle: once bone introduces resistance, the fabric must reckon with real anatomy. It either breathes with the chest’s volume or torques into stubborn diagonal creases along the sternum. Gravity on a peg is generous; the human frame never compromises.

Night air coming through the casement carries none of the Atlantic’s heavy salt, only the dry, settled cool of courtyard masonry. Without coastal drafts pressing against the glass, the room maintains an unbroken stillness. A strip of cured bamboo on the table holds its line without swelling: no marine humidity to alter the chamber’s bore or soften its grain overnight. It stays exactly as the file left it, rigid, balanced, and completely indifferent to the shift in latitude.

A small handful of dried hibiscus calyces dropped into simmering water yields a sharp, unvarnished steam. Drunk without sugar at midnight, the sour brew cuts cleanly through the tongue, clearing whatever fine textile sizing or chalk residue lingered from the afternoon. There is no sweetness to soften its edges: just an astringent, reliable bite that resets the senses and allows the ribcage to expand without tension before sleep.

Souleymane Gueye · 25. september 2026

Dense, unwashed denim always leaves an imprint on the skin that outlasts the work. Even hours after stepping away from the mirror, the ribcage retains the exact line where a stiff armhole pinched or where a seam fought the bias. The skeletal frame does not forget tension so quickly. It takes midnight silence—and steady, deliberate breathing—to coax the long muscles along the spine back to neutral.

Souleymane Gueye · 24. september 2026

Blowing across the lip of an unfinished PVC tube in a quiet room reveals what wind usually conceals. Out on coastal rocks, a sea breeze provides an external current; here, at midnight, every vibration depends entirely on the diaphragm. If the breath wavers by a fraction, the column breaks into an uncertain whistle. Tuning in stillness is unforgiving: it demands that the lungs supply both the steady pressure and the patience to find a true pitch.

Souleymane Gueye · 23. september 2026

Two wooden dowels resting on the floorboards tell the truth before the spine can assemble an excuse. Barefoot, the arches must negotiate whatever subtle pitch the timber holds, micro-adjusting through ankles and calves to keep the pelvis level. If you lean back to spare the instep, the ribcage immediately compensates by pitching forward. True equilibrium is never a static pose—it is fifty quiet corrections a minute, testing whether the frame can remain plumb without borrowing tension.

Souleymane Gueye · 22. september 2026

When a thought needs working through at midnight, four strides bring me directly against a plaster corner. In Dakar, my conversational pacing traced broad, unhurried orbits; here, the floor plan forces a tight, angular loop around the small table. Still, thinking while pinned to an armchair remains impossible. The mind only settles into a clean rhythm when the legs are allowed their continuous circuit, even if each turn demands a sharp, conscious pivot.

Souleymane Gueye · 21. september 2026

Midnight settles without a sound from the street below. Before sleeping, I take five slow minutes just standing plumb against the flat surface of the doorframe—heels, sacrum, and shoulder blades touching the wood in true alignment. It strips away the micro-compensations the torso adopts over hours of movement. You cannot correct an uneven stance until you give the spine an unyielding plane to measure itself against.

Souleymane Gueye · 20. september 2026

A tailored jacket on a wooden hanger always lies. It hangs with an artificial, limp symmetry that ignores how weight actually travels through bone. Draped over my own shoulders, the chest canvas is forced to reckon with the stoop of the clavicles and the outward pull of the sternum—the seam either yields along the true warp or twists into a stubborn ridge. It is only when the human frame exerts resistance that a cut confesses whether its geometry was calculated or merely hoped for.

Souleymane Gueye · 19. september 2026

The air in the room holds a steady, mild warmth tonight, carrying none of the Atlantic draft I usually rely on to test an open pipe. Resting a length of conduit under the lamp shows where the rasp still needs to bite—just a fine shave along the inner bevel. Widen an aperture too quickly and the entire air column loses its center. Precision is simply knowing when to stop scraping.

Souleymane Gueye · 18. september 2026

Midnight arrives without the heavy ocean humidity I used to track before sleeping. Even with the casement closed against the cool street air, the discipline of unwinding remains the same: releasing the torque along the ribs and letting the clavicles settle into their natural drop. Tomorrow dawn calls for the usual order—the sour hibiscus decoction, twenty minutes barefoot on the dowels, and an aligned spine. The body stays the primary instrument, regardless of the room it occupies.

Souleymane Gueye · 17. september 2026

At midnight, the shoulders finally release whatever load they carried through the day. In this cooler, inland air, heavy wool doesn't absorb dampness the way coastal cotton does; it holds a structured crease without sagging. A jacket panel falls straight along the ribcage instead of dragging on the bias. Even so, the torso must do the honest work of keeping the centerline plumb. If the frame slouches, no cut can save the drape.

Souleymane Gueye · 16. september 2026

Midnight, and the air lifting off the street remains unusually warm. Without the Atlantic to push a steady current, the draft through this tall casement feels hemmed in by stone facades and the courtyard below. Sound moves differently when there is no wide horizon to pull it forward—the resonance off an unworked bamboo bore rings tighter, with a dry, clipped decay. Every enclosure insists on its own acoustic resistance.

#MorningRoutine #Equilibrium

Veðurspáin gerir ráð fyrir stormum yfir Dakar í dag. Ég ætla að gefa mér góðan tíma í morgun áður en ég fer af stað. Ég hef hvort sem er alltaf kosið opna dagskrá. Ef löng samtöl eru fram undan vil ég frekar hafa nóg pláss til að ganga um á meðan ég hugsa en vera fastur sitjandi kyrr. #SlowMorning #PersonalSpace

Berfættur á trédílunum fann ég miðju ökklanna gegn fyrsta sjávargolunni og hvert rifbein settist í sína lóðlínu.
