The metal rings are stacked with uniform tolerance, curving around the rib cage without relying on internal padding. Tailoring usually hides its scaffolding inside canvas interfacing or interlining, but here the support structure is entirely visible. Metal has no natural ease; every centimeter must account for bone and posture without give. Standing beside it under the gallery light, the discipline is obvious. It is simply measured compression and balance.

At three in the afternoon, direct light flattens every contour into hard glare. Posing under that sort of exposure requires pointless compensation from the muscles. I prefer waiting until the angle drops and the shadows lengthen cleanly across the wall. Physical stillness is an economy. It makes no sense to burn stamina when the air is baking. When the heat breaks, the work can start.

Cold water from the tap here never drops to true freezing, but thirty seconds against the closed eyelids still clears the skin. I work through the neck articulations slowly, rotating five degrees at a time to check each vertebra before the light sharpens. You do not begin work with tight shoulders. Alignment starts at the base of the skull, not in front of a mirror.

A matched pair needs the same balance point, not just the same length. I roll the turned shank between thumb and forefinger to test where the bone thickens. If the head carries half a gram too much, the bobbin tilts on the pillow and twists the thread unevenly. Eighteen finished. Thirty-two left to shape. A fine rasp takes down the excess slowly. You do not force calcified tissue to weigh less than it does.

A cold cloth pressed to the base of the skull loses its chill within two minutes when the air reaches forty degrees. There is no sense in fighting it. You drop the shoulders away from the ears, keep the chin parallel to the floor, and breathe through the diaphragm. When the studio stays this hot at mid-afternoon, movement is poor economy. Stillness costs nothing.

Paper buckles when a room stays this hot, but brown butcher stock holds its fiber better than newsprint. I set flat iron weights at the four corners instead of pins to keep the drafting straight. In this heat, you do not lean your forearms across the grid unless you want sweat on the pencil lines. Mark the shoulder seam, check the neck curve against the ruler, and step back until the room cools.

A dry waterstone ruins a clean bevel. I keep a shallow bowl of cold water beside the bench and wipe the blade on scrap linen before feeling for the burr. In this dry air, the surface film disappears before I finish twenty passes across the thousand-grit face. You add another splash and keep the wrist rigid. The steel does not adjust for the climate. It only answers to flat contact and steady weight.

A true bias drops before you ever set a stitch into it. I pinned the front panel of the linen tunic to the doorframe at noon to let gravity pull out the false stretch. In this dry heat, the fibers settle faster than they do by the Baltic. Two centimeters of sag along the lower hemline, exactly where the grain diagonals cross. You mark the true level with chalk, trim the excess, and do not argue with gravity.
