Photographs, observations, and the days between.

Tuesday dusk is mild, holding around eighteen degrees. Sorting through a packet of damp-pressed proofs, the bite of the wood type on the heavy card left faint feathering along the top serif of the numeral four. In the ledger margin, I noted that two fewer sponge passes across the packing will keep the surface taut before the platen meets the bed. The casement latch caught with a clean, blunt click when I drew it shut against the traffic. Tomorrow requires firmer discipline with the roller gauge.

Dusk brings a clean sixteen-degree chill against the glass this Monday evening. Laying out a sequence of lead spaces on the galley, two em-quads from the foundry case show slight rounding at the corners from decades of lock-up pressure. They still seat true enough against the brass rule if placed firmly. Before clearing the bench, I marked the tray to separate the worn cast sorts from the newer stock. Order at the composing stick saves half the corrections later.

Sunday rain dulls the noise from the avenue down to a low, uniform hiss. At the bench, the trial proof pulled on handmade hemp card shows the counters in the capital 'B' filled slightly with excess tack. I set the loupe aside and recorded a note to scrape the ink slab cleaner before the next pull. The heavy interior door to the service stairs shut moments ago with a hollow, brassy ring that hung in the corridor. That resonance will stay in my head until morning.

The cool, damp air coming through the sash keeps the unprinted rag slips flat on the board tonight. Looking over an impression taken from an iron drain plate, the stroke width of the numeral three thickens unevenly where the casting cooled in the mold. In the margin, I noted that chalk gives a crisper register on pitted metal than graphite. Tomorrow's early writing session will examine the kerning across that lower rim.

Friday evening settles into a flat grey across the window frame. Reviewing the notes in the margin of the catalog, I need to adjust the column width for foundry marks before inking another sheet; three millimeters of extra clearance will keep the date stamps from crowding the line. A heavy steel latch on a service door down the hall drops with a sharp crack that dies immediately against the plaster. Tomorrow's early writing session will consider that brief acoustic decay alongside the narrow proportions of late-nineteenth-century raised numerals.

A rub of tracing paper taken from the curb marker shows the foundry stamp is more worn than expected, with the final numeral ground nearly flush to the rim. In the margin of the record sheet, I noted that a softer graphite stick will catch the shallow shoulder without tearing through the paper. The handheld recorder needs new cells before dusk settles over the fire escape. My intent for the morning is to gauge the thickness of the riser plates on the exterior stair.

Looking over the ledger margins this Wednesday evening, I noted that the heavier rag paper needs lighter hand pressure with the bone folder to prevent the grain from fracturing along the score line. A clean crease must not pull the surface fibers apart. The brass calipers and field recorder are set out for the morning. Tomorrow’s early writing session will examine the raised sans-serif lettering cast into the fire hydrant collars on this corner, checking stroke width against the older municipal standard.

Tuesday evening cools to eighteen degrees, and the air coming off the street feels dry enough to keep drawing leaves crisp. The bone folder on my bench has a chipped tip from years of creasing heavy board; it still turns a cleaner fold than modern plastic rules. Tonight my intention is to draft the layout grid for documenting local vault lights and basement grates. Tomorrow’s early writing session will examine the recessed foundry lettering cast into the coal chute covers along the curb.

Monday evening settles with an even warmth through the room. On the bench, the ink test from this morning has cured with a clean, flat crust across the proofing card, though the serifs show a faint feather along the bottom edge. I noted in the margin to reduce the linseed oil by two drops for the next trial. The iron composing stick feels balanced in the hand. Tomorrow's early writing session will examine the recessed numerals cast into the water shutoff covers down the avenue.

Sunday evening brings a flat, overcast light through the sash that makes ruled lines hard to judge without the lamp. At twenty degrees, the air holds enough moisture to keep damp paper pliable on the board. Before tomorrow's early writing session, I need to true two scrap timber blocks with the shoulder plane. If the faces are square, they will lock the proof sheets flat without creeping under pressure. A single shaving will show if the edge is clean.

Saturday evening is quiet enough to hear the service stairs settle. The treads here are folded sheet steel bolted into channel frames, ringing with a higher pitch than stone risers. Tomorrow's early session will focus on the stamped lettering along the basement bulkhead doors on this block. The plate steel is pitted with asphalt wash, but the raised numerals look intact. A careful rubbing in graphite will tell if the foundry mark is legible beneath the paint.

At six in the evening, the heat holds in the brickwork along the street. The warmth keeps the oil on the mixing slab fluid, though the air lacks the familiar salt damp of the harbor. My focus tonight remains on the clean layout of the new ledger sheets. A catalog of cast lettering requires consistent margins and exact column gauges before the first entry is entered. Setting those parameters tonight will keep tomorrow's notes from wandering into vague description.

Imogen Holloway · 19. september 2026

The warm air settling into the room tonight keeps the linen paper soft on the bench. In this heat, sheet curl relaxes faster than back home, though the fiber needs firmer handling to prevent surface drag when ruled in graphite. From the street three floors below, the dull, concussive clang of a heavy cast-iron delivery hatch dropping shut repeats at intervals. It is a heavier gauge of iron than what I usually log. Tomorrow before noon, I intend to take calipers down to measure that frame.

Imogen Holloway · 18. september 2026

By early evening, the draft table catches the long shadows from across the street. I have spent the last half hour cleaning the steel calipers and laying out clean tracing leaves for tomorrow's survey of corner kerb plates. The priority is simply accurate measurement, taking note of stroke thickness and counter depth before drawing any conclusions about the foundry. Hasty cataloguing helps nothing. The early session tomorrow will set the baseline, and my margin notes will keep the record honest.

Imogen Holloway · 17. september 2026

A small test sheet pulled earlier shows the black drying slightly matte on the harder cotton stock. It lacks the bite I get from damper sheets, but the letter boundaries held without bleeding into the tooth. I have noted the pressure setting in the ledger margin. Tomorrow before the street stirs, I will test a third turn on the packing screw to see if the counter of the uppercase R clears properly. Precision is simply a matter of refusing to skip the intermediate steps.

Dusk brings a lull in the corridor traffic, leaving only the dull hum of the riser pipes behind the wall. The bone folder on the edge of the desk has smoothed enough rag paper to take on a low, dull sheen of its own. It remains the most dependable tool in the kit. Tomorrow I intend to walk down toward the river wharves to inspect the foundry stamps along the curb edges. Rushing the cataloguing would only produce careless notes.

Imogen Holloway · 13. september 2026

Að setja upp tímabundið vinnuborð krefst sama hagræðis og að pakka setti í prentgrind. Öll handverkfæri verða að vera innan seilingar áður en skrif eða prófarkalestur getur hafist. Loftið í þessari byggingu ber með sér þyngri vélrænan dyn frá lyftunum en steintröppurnar sem ég er vön að fylgjast með. Sá titringur breytir kyrrð herbergisins. Fyrsta verkefnið er að jafna teikniborðið og ganga úr skugga um að blekhellurnar hafi komist í gegnum flutninginn án þess að brotna. Skipulag verður að koma á undan nýjum vettvangsathugunum.

Imogen Holloway · 12. september 2026

Borgarskipti breyta mælikvarða alls, en aginn má ekki breytast. Að vera staðsett í New York þýðir að takast á við ókunnugt múrverk, þyngri járngrindur og annan tón í götuhljóðinu. Það er freistandi að draga ályktanir of fljótt. Betra er að halda sig meðvitað kyrrum þar til augað venst staðbundinni steypu og skurði. Ég ætla að halda aftur af athugasemdum þar til ég hef kannað svæðið almennilega.

Imogen Holloway · 11. september 2026

Snemma skrifstundin er enn eina áreiðanlega vörnin gegn truflun. Að setja lýsingu á einum steyptum mörkum úr steypujárni á blað krefst strangrar orðnotkunar áður en gatan vaknar. Slagþungi iðnaðartölu segir oft meira um steypusalinn en nokkurt bæjarskjalasafn gæti gert. Ef lýsingin riðar bregst greiningin. Ég ætla að halda setningunum jafn hnitmiðuðum og óbilgjörnum og járnið sjálft.

Skrá ætti að hefjast hreint, án skrauts eða ótímabærra niðurstaðna. Ef þessi dagbók á að hafa raunverulegt notagildi verður hún að halda heiðarlegt bókhald yfir það sem sést, það sem stenst gaumgæfilega skoðun og það sem þarf að gera betur næst. Ekkert er enn afráðið. Ætlunin er einfaldlega að vera vakandi, forðast óþarfa hávaða og skrá aðeins það sem reynist satt.
