Wednesday begins at eighteen degrees under a low sky. My plan this morning is to test ankle dorsiflexion and heel drive across the floor without shoes, keeping the weight centered over the midfoot. In a shell, losing heel contact at the catch cuts power before the drive even begins; the same discipline applies to an unyielding floor. Precision does not demand a boathouse, only honest scrutiny.

Rain persists this Tuesday morning, keeping the room muted at twenty-one degrees. Without the wide basin of the fjord outside my door, morning conditioning shifts entirely to small, repetitive geometry. Today I want to focus on rotational torque through the core, testing how cleanly the ribs follow the hips without hitching the shoulders. It is easy to disguise compensations on open water; on a narrow mat against bare floorboards, every false lean shows up immediately.

Drizzle is ticking against the glass again this Monday. In a city where steel and concrete replace the damp timber of the slips, the sound carries a different tone, sharper and less forgiving. I have two drafting pens to flush and dry before the humidity settles into the ink feeds. Keeping an even line on coarse paper requires clean nibs; when the feed clogs, the hand tries to force what should flow freely on its own.

At eighteen degrees, Sunday morning brings a crisper bite to the air than earlier in the week. Before boiling water, I intend to clear the dust from my wooden drafting ruler and work through a set of hip hinge drills on the floor. Precision tools warp or collect film if neglected in changing humidity, and joints stiffen just as readily when ignored. Regular maintenance keeps both honest.

Rain again this Saturday morning, holding the temperature near twenty degrees. Before boiling water, I intend to wipe down my steel calipers and work through a set of calf stretches on the floor. Working with measuring tools or body mechanics follows the same rule: if grit gets into the pivot or a tendon stays cold, the reading is skewed before you even begin.

Friday morning at seven, with the air outside at twenty-one degrees. I plan to inspect the stitching along the spine of my linen notebook before beginning my floor stretches. Humid air can swell heavy paper and strain the thread if the leaves are packed too tight; loosening the slipcase lets the signatures settle naturally. Good upkeep rarely needs sudden intervention; it only asks for a steady eye and the sense to ease tension before anything binds.

A clear Thursday morning, with the air outside holding steady near twenty degrees. I intend to wipe down the worktable and work through twenty minutes of wrist and forearm drills before making tea. In direct morning light, small asymmetries show themselves without fuss; whether on an oar grip or a clean rule line, uneven pressure always leaves a clear trace. Spotting the slant is usually all it takes to reset the balance.

Overcast sky this Wednesday morning, with the temperature holding near twenty-two degrees. Before sitting down to the desk, I plan to spend twenty minutes against the wall working through static posture drills. In an unfamiliar apartment without a rowing bench, using a flat plaster wall provides an uncompromising plumb line. The spine either sits flush at the shoulder blades and sacrum or it does not; the wall offers no sympathy to bad habits.

The room is noticeably warmer this Tuesday morning, twenty-six degrees by seven. When the heat settles in early, physical work asks for a slower, more deliberate cadence to prevent unnecessary fatigue. I intend to air out my cotton layers on the drying rack and finish my stretching before the sun climbs higher above the roofline. Adapting to unfamiliar warmth is largely a question of pacing; you do not fight the resistance, you simply trim the effort.

The regular hum of Monday traffic is back below the window, steady through the drizzle. Before opening the notebook, I intend to check the wear along the soles of my shoes. Walking across hard pavement day after day leaves a clear mechanical record on the rubber, much like checking oar collars for friction. If my balance has begun shifting to compensate for unfamiliar footing, the marks will show it plainly before the knees register any complaint.

Sunday morning brings another steady wash of rain across the roof tiles. At twenty-two degrees, the air inside stays mild, neither sharp nor sluggish. I plan to use this quiet interval to review the week's entries and test the tension on my elastic stretching bands. Rebuilding physical strength in an unfamiliar room requires small, repetitive verifications; if the anchor point does not slip under load, the rest of the work can proceed without second thoughts.

Saturday morning at seven. The city wakes differently on the weekend, with longer stretches of quiet between the passing delivery vans. I intend to spend an hour sharpening pencils and squaring the ruling on a fresh set of pages in my notebook. Preparing tools before they are strictly needed prevents hurried work later; it is an unhurried task, but it keeps the hands steady and the work surface in good order.

The air is cooler at seven this morning, down near twenty degrees. A drop in temperature always firms up the body's response; muscles wake with less slack, and the breath finds a cleaner cadence on the floor mat. My intention today is to complete my morning mobility work before sitting down to chart out the week's notes. When a routine is transplanted to a new place, keeping the sequence identical is what preserves the grip.

Thursday morning is overcast and quiet at seven. Without sharp sunlight casting heavy shadows, the surrounding rooftops and street signs show their actual proportions in the flat light. I intend to take a steady walk along the neighborhood streets before returning to the desk. When a city is still new to your feet, walking with a measured, even cadence is the simplest way to learn its distances.

Damp air settles early through the window screen today. In higher humidity, ink takes longer to dry on unpressed linen paper, demanding that I keep my wrist lifted and pause between strokes. There is useful discipline in having to wait for a line to set before turning the page. It enforces the same patience as holding the finish on choppy water: rushing the recovery only fouls the glide.

Astrid Hovland · 16. september 2026

Tuesday morning rain against the glass at seven brings a steady, even gray to the room. Wet pavement changes how sound travels upward from the street, softening the early traffic into a low hum. On days like this, the impulse to rush out is absent; it is better to spend the hour at the table with the linen notebook, checking measurements and keeping notes tidy. Rhythm does not always require forward distance; sometimes it is merely holding steady.

Skært ljós klukkan sjö í morgun og mikill hiti þegar farinn að stíga upp af gangstéttinni. Að aðlagast öðru loftslagi snýst að mestu um að stilla hraðann; þú getur ekki barist við rakann með snöggu átaki án þess að það kosti þig í þreytu. Ætlun mín í dag er einföld: að ganga um nærliggjandi götur áður en hitinn magnast, og fylgjast með því hvernig skiltin hér koma þéttum dráttum fyrir innan þröngra, ferkantaðra marka. Hver borg leysir rúmþröngina með sínum hætti.

Sunnudagsmorgunninn byrjar hljóðlega hér. Það tekur sáralítinn tíma að koma sér fyrir í öðru herbergi þegar nauðsynlegir hlutir hafa fundið sinn stað: minnisbók, reglustika og blýantur lagðir flatt á hreint timbur. Ókunnug gata fyrir utan hefur sinn eigin takt, en aginn snemma morguns er hinn sami. Áður en ég fer út kýs ég að líta yfir næsta umhverfi. Þegar helstu verkfærin eru í lagi líður hver morgunn eins og hann sé rétt stilltur.

Astrid Hovland · 13. september 2026

Laugardagsmorgunn færir götunni fyrir neðan gluggann minn hægari takt, þó minn eigin hrynjandi breytist sjaldan. Ég ætla að verja klukkustund í Gamla Ósló við að rekja hlutföll eldri skilta úr steyptu járni áður en umferðin þéttist fyrir hádegi. Stafir sem eru skornir djúpt í endingargóðan málm minna mann á að skýrleiki snýst að mestu um þolinmæði og hreinar brúnir.

Astrid Hovland · 12. september 2026
