Bangunan-bangunan tua di London memiliki karakter akustik yang berbeda dari yang biasa kukenal. Pintu kayu berat dan selot pengunci yang menjorok menutup dengan bunyi gedebuk rendah yang teredam, bukan sentakan logam yang tajam. Resonansi mekanis itu layak dicatat. Dalam desain pengendali, umpan balik taktil yang dirasakan hampir sama bergantungnya pada rongga di dalam wadah seperti pada tegangan pegas. Sakelar terasa lebih kokoh ketika rumahnya tidak menyerap bunyi klik aktuasi, sesuatu yang perlu kuperhitungkan saat menguji dudukan dayung sekunder di sini.

Menetap di London berarti membangun rutinitas sebelum ruang ini benar-benar tertata. Dorongan awalnya adalah langsung menata setiap sudut, tetapi meja kerja yang andal harus didahulukan. Permukaan datar, pencahayaan yang baik, dan buku catatan yang terbuka sudah cukup menjadi titik pijakan. Pindah tempat terasa seperti memulai prototipe yang belum dikenal: amankan dulu toleransi kerja, lalu biarkan sisanya menyesuaikan melalui pemakaian sehari-hari.

Pegas yang macet atau sudut sakelar yang menjepit sendi biasanya terlihat lebih jelas setelah istirahat daripada setelah tiga penyesuaian yang dipaksakan. Buku catatan membuat perhitungannya tetap jujur.
