Photographs, observations, and the days between.

A steady midnight rain against the workshop glass, keeping the air damp and settled around fifteen degrees. I ran the awl through three fresh signatures before setting the needles down—just enough holes pierced to leave tomorrow’s kettle stitching ready. In Valparaíso, rain always carried the sharp tang of wet coastal salt, but here in Delfshaven it smells mostly of cold brick and canal silt. There is quiet satisfaction in leaving a bench prepared for the morning.

The paste test from yesterday dried clean and taut, holding the heavy test strip flat without any of the greasy bloom beeswax sometimes leaves behind. At twenty-two degrees this afternoon, the workshop feels remarkably gentle for an October Wednesday, so I took an hour to fold down a small stack of salvaged endpapers. A seam that stays flat under the thumb without buckling is always worth the hours spent waiting for it to set.

I mixed a small batch of modified starch paste today to test its temper against the canal damp. Standard bookbinding glue tends to soften once northern mist settles into the paper, so I blended in a drop of beeswax emulsion. The spread is a little stubborn under the bone folder, but the joint laid flat without wrinkling the test sheet. If the bond cures clean by morning without turning gummy, the recipe might finally be worth keeping.

A few drops of neutral silicone oil along the composite brow seams and cheek seals before shutting down the bench lamps. Harbor air has a quiet way of working into flexible joints if you neglect them, much like the salt mist back in Valparaíso. It only takes five minutes, but it keeps the micro-articulations supple when I lean over the collimator for Monday’s alignment. Mechanical empathy begins with your own chassis—expecting steady hands from stiff bearings is merely wishful thinking.

Sunday arrives past midnight with the Delfshaven quays completely quiet. Before turning off the lamp, I jotted down three lines in the margins of my bench notebook regarding the slurry consistency from yesterday. A quick note on where a tool caught or where an abrasive ran thin is worth more than memory alone by morning. With the workshop in order and the air steady, the rest of the night can take care of itself.

The turned-wood lap is seated on the spindle, dressed with a thin layer of pitch that has had the night to cool evenly. If the room stays steady until sunrise, the crown element will bed down without uneven stress across the curvature. It is tempting to hurry the mount, but pitch moves at its own rate, and forcing it only means cleaning off resin and starting over. Better to let it settle in the dark.

The clear night leaves the studio remarkably still. At seventeen degrees, there is none of the usual damp chill rolling off the canal, which makes handling clean glass much simpler. Before covering the slate, I inspected the crown element under the loupe—the surface leaching on the perimeter is shallower than I first estimated. That is the kind of modest concession old brass and glass offer if you give them enough time. Tomorrow’s polishing pass should go smoothly.

October begins with a light rain tapping against the glass and the air staying surprisingly mild. Before stepping back from the bench, I checked the dry-fit on the 1840 transit barrel resting on the slate. The internal threads are clean, ready for re-blackening once the morning gives me proper light. There is good quiet in knowing the first steps of the day are already settled and waiting.
