I tapped the smallest basalt bar with the boxwood striker just once, keeping it gentle so the sound wouldn't carry through the wall. The pitch held remarkably clear—a dry, ringing note without any dullness. In Reykjavik, the damp sea air seemed to swallow higher frequencies before they could travel, but in this warm room, the tone hangs in the silence for seconds. When a cut stone finally yields the exact pitch you shaped it for, there is nothing left to file down. Time to put the mallet down and rest.

Caught myself loosening a tight loop of basting thread from my left pinky before clearing the table. The tip had already gone pale, numb enough to force a quick rummage for the snips. It is an old, unconscious tic—testing tension against skin the second my hands are empty, as if fabric or wire needs measuring even off set. A thin white ring lingers for a minute until the circulation catches up. Small reminders that the body doesn't switch off on command.

At midnight, the air coming through the open sash is still warm enough that the floorboards feel almost neutral under bare feet. After months of bracing my soles against freezing timber the second I stepped out of bed, walking across the room without that sharp shock still throws off my internal clock. It asks less defensive bracing from the hips. A softer baseline to start a Monday on, though tomorrow’s breathwork will have to generate its own heat.

Running a thumb lightly across the bevel of the small U-gouge before rolling up the tool wrap. If an edge drags even a fraction, you feel it immediately against the skin. In relief carving, you never force a tired blade into the matrix; it bruises the fibers instead of cutting a crisp plane, and you lose the line. Three steady passes over the oilstone brought the bite back. That faint mineral smell of steel and sharpening oil always settles the room. A clean edge waiting for tomorrow.

A stack of heavy cotton rag paper from the residency sits weighted under a smooth stone on the shelf. Standing flat against the doorframe for five minutes before turning in gives a clean baseline. On set, you spend hours arching or leaning out over empty space to make heavy tailoring hold an angle, counterweighting the hips against the drop of the cloth. When the frame is finished and the lights shut down, the spine just wants simple verticality. It takes very little to reset: jaw level, heels planted, breathing until the ribs stop bracing. The body settles fast once you give it a true plumb line.

In Maputo, you could smell roasted sesame drift out from neighboring doorways at first light. Here, ten minutes after midnight, that nutty scent is just mine, trapped in a warm kitchen. It grounds the stomach and the spine before the rest of the day asks anything of you.

Better to sleep, reset the breath at dawn, and let the grain wait.

Ada kepuasan tersendiri melihat meja dapur yang rapi pada malam hari. Aku meninggalkan jagung kering dan stoples pasta wijen sangrai agar saat fajar tiba aku tidak perlu mencari-cari. Berpindah antar kota mengguncang hampir setiap titik acuan fisik, tetapi sarapan pertama tidak perlu diciptakan ulang. Beban yang mantap di awal hari membuat segala sesuatu yang lain tidak ikut hanyut.

Rupanya, kebiasaan lama membongkar dirinya sendiri lebih dulu. Udara larut yang mengalir melalui jendela tinggi ternyata cukup hangat, tanpa sedikit pun hembusan Atlantik yang selama setahun perlu kuadaptasi. Tubuh perlu sesaat untuk mengingat bahwa malam yang hangat tidak menuntut kita bersiap menahan dingin.

Aku menghabiskan satu jam yang tenang untuk menata berkas dan pahat-pahat kecilku berderet di sepanjang rak rendah. Begitu alat-alat memiliki sudut yang masuk akal secara struktural, seluruh apartemen mulai bernapas dalam tempo yang tepat.

Pindah ke ruangan baru selalu dimulai dari lantai. Setiap susunan papan lantai memiliki kekakuan yang berbeda dan mengembalikan tahanannya sendiri di bawah telapak kakiku. Perlu waktu semalaman untuk mengukur aliran udara, merasakan tempat cahaya melintas di atas papan, dan membiarkan keseimbanganku menyesuaikan diri dengan ruang yang asing. Begitu pusat tubuhku sejajar, sisanya mengikuti dengan cukup mudah.
