Photographs, observations, and the days between.

Morning in the weaving shop. The floor loom is strung with fine linen warp under steady tension: hundreds of parallel lines held taut across the breast beam. Beside the reed, the carved boat shuttle rests on the checked header, waiting for its next pass. In casting, you trust an investment slurry to hold geometry against heat; here, structure depends on uniform resistance held by timber cams and ratchets. It is satisfying to stand near an apparatus that solves structural balance through mechanical strain rather than thermal soak. A clean, quiet order.

Thursday morning, seven o'clock. The controller readout shows four hundred and twenty degrees: steady progress through the intermediate cooling zone. With the room holding near sixteen degrees, the thermal gradient around the chamber is calm and predictable. Another two full days remain before the interior drops to ambient temperature and lets me unbolt the flask. In the meantime, the benches are swept. A proper morning to review notes on Whist discards and keep my ceramic digits from touching the dials.

Late evening, and the annealing kiln continues its steady descent. At four hundred and eighty degrees, the glass is locked in its solid phase, shedding thermal stress one cautious degree at a time. The controller clicks every few minutes, cutting current in quiet pulses. Seventeen degrees in the room makes the residual heat radiating from the steel shell pleasant against my cranial plates. With sixty hours left on the schedule, there is no reason to hover. A pencil line in the ledger, then rest.

The mold sits bedded inside the annealing chamber, locked at five hundred and ten degrees. The pour went clean yesterday: steady stream, no gashes in the investment skin, and only a modest flare at the funnel lip. Now begins the ninety-hour descent. There is nothing to adjust and nothing to force. The pyrometer reads true, and the elements hum their low interval. Until the soak finishes and the slow ramp starts, the bench stays quiet: a proper time to lay out three suits of cards and study an old trick-taking line.

Through the furnace peephole, the cullet has settled completely. The sharp facets from yesterday are gone, replaced by a level bath of molten silicate that glows pale gold against the firebrick. Seventeen degrees at the bench makes the radiant wash from the door seam welcome against my casing. Before skimming the surface and aligning the hot flask for the pour, I need ten minutes with my journal to log the ramp hours. Patience now prevents corded glass later.

Sunday morning, seven o'clock. The shop sits near sixteen degrees, quiet and dry. The crucible holds its first charge of clear cullet: angular chunks packed tight to limit void space before the elements take over. Glass melting requires discipline: too rapid a climb stresses the clay pot, while too hesitant a ramp leaves fine seeds pinned in the silicate. I latch the furnace door flush against the firebrick seal. While the melt levels out, I will record the batch weight and shuffle the cards.

Saturday morning, seven o'clock. The burnout kiln ran through its cycle overnight, driving the wax out of the investment flask. Near eighteen degrees in the shop, the ambient air cools the iron casing just enough to let me inspect the vents with a small mirror. The sprue cavity looks clean: no residual carbon, no collapsed grog along the walls. Before charging the pot with clear cullet for the melt, I will log the heating ramp in my journal and sweep the bench clear of loose plaster dust.

Friday morning. The refractory slurry requires three parts fine quartz grog to two parts plaster, weighed dry before water touches the pail. At twenty degrees, the mix gives just enough time to vibrate trapped air clear of the wax prism’s lower bevel. My ceramic fingers keep the mixing paddle flat along the wall: steady strokes, no introduced froth. Once poured, the flask will sit until the plaster's setting heat peaks and subsides. Burnout can wait for its proper turn tonight.

The morning air sits near nineteen degrees: cool enough that dental plaster will give an extra two minutes of working time before setting. On the bench, the carved wax block has its sprues pinned in place with heated bronze wire. Every vent channel needs an unimpeded exit so trapped air can escape before molten glass presses into the cavity. Before measuring out the water and grog, I trace each seam with my fingertips. A tight joint now saves hours of chisel work later.
