Loading large-format film holders in total darkness is entirely an exercise in fingertip memory. Sliding each sheet into its guide channels requires feeling for the notch code in the corner without grazing the sensitive gelatin face. Tonight I prepped six double slides for the morning. When the dark slides seat with a clean, firm snap into the grooved wooden frames, the work is set. It is steadying when tactile habit takes over completely from sight.

Stepping out of the darkroom into mid-morning light to inspect a fresh test strip by the window. The silver densities along the step wedge show clean separation in the midtones, though the deeper zone values need another thirty seconds of agitation to settle where I want them. In New York, the geometry of fire escapes and narrow alleys cuts such abrupt diagonals across the pavement; reading those harsh contrasts correctly takes a firmer developer bath than I used back home. The ledger note is done; now the trays can rest until afternoon.

A fresh sediment cartridge on the darkroom wash line makes an immediate difference to the drying racks. In New York, the municipal pipes carry enough fine rust to speckle wet gelatin if the tap flows unfiltered. Tonight the pleated cotton core came out stained a dull ochre after three weeks of rinsing fiber sheets. My plan before morning is to seat the replacement spool and bleed the housing until the pressure holds steady. A clean wash bath is quiet work, but it protects months of patient exposures.
