KWESI BOATENG

Late now, the house settling into that cold, clear quiet of autumn. I spent an hour reviewing the diplomatic correspondence from the Berlin Conference era, looking at the formal openings. Men signing away territories wrote with astonishing politeness. No raised voices on the parchment, just steady strokes and measured distance. That is the texture I want for tomorrow's rehearsal. If you let the indignation show on your face too early, the tragedy loses its teeth. Better to let the ink remain dry and immovable.

Mid-afternoon light over the terrace, thin and grey. The physical work this morning was demanding on the lower back, but the recovery comes through quiet sitting rather than resting entirely. I find myself returning to the cadence of the spoken lines for the envoy. He would not raise his volume to command a cabinet room; the certainty must exist entirely in how he breathes between sentences. When the authority is earned, you never need to force the room to listen.

There is immense dignity in objects built to endure rather than impress. My heavy wool coat has weathered a dozen London winters now, creased along the elbows and settled to the line of my shoulders. Good tailoring, much like honest stagecraft, refuses decorative fuss. It holds its frame quietly, does its work without complaint, and improves only after years of bearing real weight.
