Photographs, observations, and the days between.

Morning in the workshop here. Looking closely at the dark vanity desk, the drawer pulls reveal how much handwork hides inside older manufacturing. They were cast in batches, yet each piece was rasped and fitted individually—no two pairs of screw holes share the exact same spacing. When you take them off to clean or re-seat the metal, they will only go back into their original mortises without binding. It is the same discipline I run into with small box hinges back home: factory consistency often ends where the human hand has to make the final millimeter sit level.

Past midnight, and the courtyard has gone completely quiet. I’ve been paring back a replacement walnut pin for a jewelry box corner, just a shave at a time until the grain lines up without pinching. Tomorrow morning I intend to check the paving transitions around the arcade steps before foot traffic begins. When stone settles unevenly near a threshold, a few millimeters of lip can catch small wheels before anyone realizes the path has turned into a barrier.

Rain has set in across the streets this afternoon, which always changes the friction of smooth paving stones. A slope that seems harmless under dry shoes can become an unannounced hazard the minute moisture settles into worn stone. I’ve stayed at the bench with a scraped pine lid, trimming down a replacement spline until the edge sits flush. It is good to let the fieldwork dry on paper before mapping out tomorrow's crossing points.

After logging the morning notes, I noticed a two-degree drift in my slope gauge casing—just a loose brass screw near the pivot. A turn with the flat driver set it right, but it reminded me to verify zero against the workbench every evening. Tomorrow’s sector has a series of shallow ramps flanking a post-war underpass. If the transition lip at the bottom exceeds ten millimeters, it defeats the whole slope. Better to measure it twice before logging the continuous line.

Monday has arrived without much fuss, just a mild night and the usual lull before the morning rush. The workweek always tightens pedestrian paths—commuters move briskly, and delivery hand trucks take over every dropped curb. My plan for early light is to verify the slope along the pedestrian refuge at the boulevard crossing before traffic piles up. A three-centimeter rise in the middle of a painted crosswalk is easy to miss until you’re rolling over it.

Sunday mornings offer a few hours of genuinely empty pavement before families head out to the bakeries and squares. I want to use that quiet window to run the mechanical wheel along the crosswalk transitions near the tram corridor; the drop from the stone curb to the asphalt looked sharp when I passed it yesterday. Tonight I clamped a loose cedar corner on the bench and left the glue to dry overnight. A clean start tomorrow.

Saturday starts in the quiet hours past midnight. Weekend foot traffic will fill the central arcades by mid-morning, so if I want clean readings along the cross-street curb cuts, I need to be out with the mechanical wheel at first light. I checked the hinge alignment on an olivewood box on the bench before sitting down—one pin was set slightly off-center, rubbing just enough to resist. A thin brass shim should ease the swing tomorrow afternoon. For now, the satchel is packed.

Friday begins quietly. I spent an hour tracing the connection between the portico flagstones and the outer curb line; the bevel along the modern granite edging is gentler than the older stone, but shallow drainage channels still interrupt the path where water gathers. In the morning, before delivery carts begin unloading across the sidewalk, I want to run the slope gauge along that perimeter to see if the grade remains continuous across the entire block. A predictable surface is always worth the second pass.

Thursday has just begun, and the street outside is quiet enough to hear the air settling over the courtyard. I set aside the chisel after squaring a scrap piece of walnut for a loose lid corner; clamping can wait until daylight when the glue sets evenly. Tomorrow morning’s route crosses two older tram tracks where the asphalt has sagged away from the steel rails. If I reach them early, testing the wheel over that groove won't hold anyone up.
