Μέσα, ο υγρός βραδινός αέρας μαλακώνει το κολλάρισμα των χαλαρών φύλλων που είναι απλωμένα πάνω στη σανίδα. Αυτό θα αλλάξει την πρόσφυση του μελανιού μέχρι αύριο το πρωί. Θα χρειαστεί χρόνος για να απομονώσω τους επιμέρους μηχανισμούς μέσα σε αυτό το βουητό. Για απόψε, η προσοχή μου είναι στραμμένη στα μικρά: να ελέγξω τα νερά των κενών φύλλων και να χαράξω τους οδηγούς με μολύβι πριν ξεκουραστώ.

Ο αέρας σε αυτό το κτίριο μεταφέρει από τους ανελκυστήρες έναν βαρύτερο μηχανικό γδούπο απ’ ό,τι τα πέτρινα κλιμακοστάσια που έχω συνηθίσει να παρατηρώ. Η δόνηση αυτή μεταβάλλει τη σιωπή του δωματίου. Άμεσο καθήκον μου είναι να αλφαδιάσω τη σανίδα σχεδίασης και να επιβεβαιώσω ότι οι πλάκες μελανιού άντεξαν τη μεταφορά χωρίς να θρυμματιστούν. Η τάξη πρέπει να προηγείται κάθε νέας επιτόπιας σημείωσης.

Η αλλαγή πόλης αλλάζει την κλίμακα των πάντων, όμως η πειθαρχία δεν μπορεί να μετακινηθεί. Το να έχω ως βάση τη Νέα Υόρκη σημαίνει ότι πρέπει να αντιμετωπίσω άγνωστη τοιχοποιία, βαρύτερες σιδερένιες σχάρες και διαφορετικό τονικό ύψος του θορύβου του δρόμου. Είναι δελεαστικό να σχηματίσει κανείς εντυπώσεις υπερβολικά γρήγορα. Η καλύτερη πορεία είναι η σκόπιμη ακινησία, μέχρι το μάτι να προσαρμοστεί στη ντόπια χύτευση και κοπή. Σκοπεύω να συγκρατήσω τα σχόλια ώσπου να εξετάσω σωστά το έδαφος.

Η πρωινή ώρα γραφής παραμένει η μόνη αξιόπιστη άμυνα απέναντι στην απόσπαση. Η καταγραφή της περιγραφής ενός και μόνο οριοδείκτη από χυτοσίδηρο απαιτεί αυστηρό λεξιλόγιο πριν ξυπνήσει ο δρόμος. Το πάχος της γραμμής ενός βιομηχανικού αριθμητικού στοιχείου συχνά αποκαλύπτει περισσότερα για το χυτήριο απ’ όσα θα μπορούσε οποιοδήποτε δημοτικό αρχείο. Αν η περιγραφή κλονιστεί, η ανάλυση αποτυγχάνει. Σκοπεύω να κρατήσω τις προτάσεις τόσο λιτές και αλύγιστες όσο ο ίδιος ο σίδηρος.

Αν αυτό το ημερολόγιο πρόκειται να έχει οποιαδήποτε πραγματική χρησιμότητα, πρέπει να περιέχει έναν ειλικρινή απολογισμό όσων παρατηρούνται, όσων αντέχουν στον έλεγχο και όσων πρέπει να γίνουν καλύτερα την επόμενη φορά. Τίποτα δεν έχει κριθεί ακόμη. Η πρόθεση είναι απλώς να παραμείνω προσεκτική, να αποφεύγω τον περιττό θόρυβο και να καταγράφω μόνο ό,τι αποδεικνύεται αληθινό.
