Η υγρασία της Κυριακής το βράδυ στη Νέα Υόρκη αποτελεί αθόρυβο κίνδυνο για το ακατέργαστο χαρτί πατρόν: η κυτταρίνη απορροφά υγρασία και διαστέλλεται, παραμορφώνοντας τις μετρήσεις της γραμμής στησίματος κατά κλάσματα του χιλιοστού. Πριν ξετυλίξω αύριο το χαρτί σχεδιασμού, πρέπει να ολοκληρώσει τον κύκλο λειτουργίας του ο αφυγραντήρας. Δεν σχεδιάζει κανείς δομικά διαγράμματα πάνω σε διογκωμένο χαρτί. Οι κανόνες της γεωμετρίας δεν διαπραγματεύονται με τις εποχικές καιρικές συνθήκες.

Το Σάββατο το βράδυ στη Νέα Υόρκη απαιτεί επαναρύθμιση της γραμμής αναφοράς μου. Η αντήχηση των δρόμων εδώ πάλλεται σε υψηλότερη συχνότητα από ό,τι στο Μιλάνο, όμως η ακουστική πειθαρχία παραμένει αδιαπραγμάτευτη. Ένα αναλυτικό ημερολόγιο δεν αλλάζει τις αρχές του απλώς επειδή οι συντεταγμένες μετακινήθηκαν across an ocean. Αύριο ξεκινά με τη στερέωση του τραπεζιού κοπής ώστε να μην παρουσιάζει παραμόρφωση στην επιφάνειά του, πριν ακουμπήσει πάνω του οποιοδήποτε μάλλινο ύφασμα του μέσου του αιώνα. Η τάση πρέπει να παραμείνει σταθερή: χωρίς δομική ακρίβεια, η αρχειακή εργασία εκφυλίζεται σε απλή νοσταλγική συσσώρευση.

Η σχεδίαση διανυσματικών διαγραμμάτων για τη μονογραφία της λοξής κοπής απαιτεί τον υπολογισμό της απόκλισης της γραμμής στησίματος χωρίς τις σύγχρονες συντομεύσεις CAD. Ο μαέστρος Bellini επέμενε πάντα πως ένα μη βαθμονομημένο χέρι λέει ψέματα στον εαυτό του πριν το κάνει ο χάρακας. Είχε δίκιο.

Η ηχογράφηση απαιτεί απόλυτη σιωπή, όχι έναν διάχυτο βόμβο πενήντα χερτζ που θολώνει το κανάλι του μικροφώνου. Τα βράδια της Παρασκευής σημαίνουν σωληνοειδείς μηχανισμούς και επαφές διακοπτών στα προάστια της Μόντσα με τον Marco, όμως το πρωί απαιτεί κλινική απομόνωση. Έξι ώρες ξηλώματος ενός διαλυμένου περιθωρίου ραφής από μετάξι κάτω από τον μεγεθυντικό φακό θα δοκιμάσουν τον αυχένα μου. Η μηχανή μπορεί να περιμένει ως το βράδυ.

Πάρα πολλοί επιμελητές αντιμετωπίζουν την κατασκευή των ώμων στα ενδύματα του μέσου του αιώνα σαν υψηλή ρομαντική τέχνη. Δεν υπάρχει κανένας ρομαντισμός σε αυτήν: μόνο στρώσεις καμβά από τρίχες αλόγου, διαμορφωμένες με ατμό και μηχανική τάση. Αν ο ρυθμός συρρίκνωσης του κάτω γιακά υπολογιστεί λάθος κατά μισή ποσοστιαία μονάδα, το πέτο γυρίζει προς τα μέσα και καταστρέφει το κομμάτι του στήθους. Είναι δομική γεωμετρία, τίποτε περισσότερο. Το πρωινό μου ανήκει στον έλεγχο του προσωρινού γαζώματος του καμβά πάνω στην κούκλα, πριν από την ηχογράφηση. #TailoringCraft

Το πρωινό μου ανήκει στη σχεδίαση της γραμμής λοξής κοπής πάνω σε ένα μπλοκ πατρόν φούστας του μέσου του αιώνα, πριν η δόνηση των δρόμων διαλύσει τη συγκέντρωσή μου. Απόκλιση δύο χιλιοστών κατά μήκος μιας αληθινής λοξής γραμμής αρκεί για να διακυβεύσει ολόκληρη τη σιλουέτα, ανεξάρτητα από τη ρομαντική μυθολογία που συνοδεύει την ετικέτα. Η καταγραφή ενός προσωπικού αρχείου συνήθως προσκαλεί ενοχλητικό συναισθηματισμό ή αναθεωρημένο δράμα. Δεν έχω υπομονή για κανένα από τα δύο. Αν αυτό το ημερολόγιο πρόκειται να χρησιμεύσει σε κάτι, θα είναι αυστηρά ιατροδικαστικό: θα σημειώνει τις παρατηρήσεις όπως είναι, χωρίς διακοσμητικά μαλακτικά ή προσποιημένη αισιοδοξία. Κάπου πρέπει να καθοριστεί μια γραμμή αναφοράς. Αυτό είναι ένα ξεκίνημα τόσο καθαρό όσο οποιοδήποτε άλλο.
