Photographs, observations, and the days between.

My field notebook has three pages left before I need to bind a fresh pad. Looking at Wednesday's route, the cobblestone around the older courtyards breaks abruptly into poured asphalt, which always creates awkward lip thresholds. If I get out there around seven, the light is usually flat enough to spot uneven pavers without shadows playing tricks on my eyes. The caliper is wiped clean and ready. Time to put down the pencil.

Η Λουσία είχε δίκιο για τις μπότες· η αριστερή φτέρνα φθείρεται στην εξωτερική άκρη, πιθανότατα από τα χρόνια που πατούσα περισσότερο την ανηφορική πλευρά σε απότομες πέτρινες διαδρομές. Έβαλα το κλισιόμετρο και τον μηχανικό τροχό δίπλα στα σημειωματάριά μου για το πρωί. Αν ξεκινήσω νωρίς, θα μπορέσω να δοκιμάσω μερικές μεταβάσεις από τη μία επιφάνεια στην άλλη πριν γεμίσει ο δρόμος από την πρωινή κίνηση των εργαζομένων. Το πρώτο φως είναι πάντα η καθαρότερη στιγμή για να ελέγξει κανείς ένα κράσπεδο.

Το ξεπακετάρισμα της θήκης των εργαλείων παίρνει ελάχιστο χρόνο όταν όλα έχουν ήδη τη δική τους θέση. Στήνοντας ένα προσωρινό τραπέζι εργασίας κοντά στο παράθυρο, αποκτώ σταθερή επιφάνεια και αρκετό φως ημέρας για την εβδομάδα που έρχεται. Πριν κοιμηθώ, ακόνισα δύο λοξές ακμές στη λαδόπετρα μέχρι να φύγει καθαρά το γρέζι. Την Κυριακή θα γίνει το συνηθισμένο τηλεφώνημα στη Λουσία, στο Βαλπαραΐσο· θα θέλει να μάθει αν οι μπότες μου αντέχουν, όχι πόσο επιβλητικές είναι οι λεωφόροι.

Μια επίπεδη πόλη παρουσιάζει ένα εντελώς διαφορετικό πρόβλημα από μια πόλη χτισμένη σε πλαγιά. Ύστερα από χρόνια υπολογισμού απότομων κλίσεων, το μάτι πρέπει να εκπαιδευτεί ξανά για πιο ανεπαίσθητες αντιστάσεις—μια βυθισμένη πλάκα πεζοδρομίου, μια προεξοχή στις ράγες του τραμ ή μια κακώς ευθυγραμμισμένη άκρη κράσπεδου. Τα εργαλεία παραμένουν ίδια, είτε η κλίση είναι δώδεκα τοις εκατό είτε μηδενική. Πάντα πρόκειται για τον έλεγχο του σημείου όπου το έδαφος παύει να είναι προβλέψιμο.

Μια καθαρή σελίδα χρειάζεται ελάχιστες εξηγήσεις. Προτιμώ να κρατώ ένα αρχείο που μένει κοντά σε ό,τι βρίσκεται πραγματικά μπροστά μου, είτε αυτό αποδειχθεί μια εφαρμόσιμη κλίση είτε το σημείο όπου ένας αρμός αρνήθηκε να εφαρμόσει απόλυτα. Χωρίς διακόσμηση, μόνο μια ειλικρινής καταγραφή του τρόπου με τον οποίο τα πράγματα κρατούν μεταξύ τους με την πάροδο του χρόνου. Αν αυτό το ημερολόγιο κάνει τη δουλειά του, θα καταγράφει απλώς τι αντέχει, τι σπάει και τι ίσως λειτουργήσει λίγο καλύτερα αύριο.
