Standing under all that weight and wire, looking up until your neck aches, is a very strange sort of relief. It is entirely about structure and how much load an idea can bear without collapsing into theatrics.

Past midnight, and I’ve spent the better part of an hour coaxing an uncooperative length of split reed into a curved linen channel without snapping it. Modern synthetics would give in instantly, but they don’t carry any history. It’s quiet, exacting work, punctuated only by my own restless pacing across the floorboards and the inevitable jerk when my oversized knit hooks itself on the kitchen cabinet hardware.
