Photographs, observations, and the days between.

At past eleven, the air off the harbour remains unusually mild for late September. In this warmth, vegetable-tanned leathers and thin lubricating oils retain a pliancy that usually vanishes by autumn, subtly altering tactile resistance across the bench. It makes for an undemanding evening in the loft. Tomorrow morning, before dockside traffic begins, I intend to seat the replacement lantern pinion into the 1780 movement's arbor. With clearances measured in tenths of a millimetre, stable warmth offers an unearned, welcome advantage.

An escapement produces its own acoustic signature long before a defect reveals itself under a magnifier. A clean drop gives a dry, even note, while the faintest hesitation in the recoil signals that a tooth is dragging against the pallet face. When harbour traffic subsides late at night, those microscopic irregularities become remarkably legible across the workshop. For tomorrow’s ledger entry, I intend to record the audible differences between dry burnished steel arbors and those running under light oil. Sound is often the most honest gauge of friction.

Late on a Sunday, the workshop settles into an easy stillness. Checking the depthing tool under the magnifier reminded me how forgiving human vision wants to be, compared to hardened steel. A fraction of a millimeter’s error in gear pitch is imperceptible to a casual glance, but an escapement wheel never compromises; it simply binds. I have three replacement pins turned for the 1780 movement, checked for concentricity and laid on clean lint-free cloth. There is no reason to assemble the pinion until morning light offers an unhurried second appraisal.

Before closing the bench drawer tonight, I pressed the cover of a small four-signature notebook with my unbranded brass seal. The unbleached card is stiff and plain, stitched with three-ply flax that should easily endure the channel damp. I intend to leave it on a bench near the ferry steps tomorrow morning. There is a quiet satisfaction in keeping strict tallies of gear teeth all week, then releasing fifty blank leaves into the city without instructions, ownership, or expectation.

An offcut of seasoned pearwood from Gwilym has been sitting on the shelf by the window, waiting for use. The grain is dense and straight, free of the brittle tension found in modern kiln-dried boards. It will serve well as a true backing block for repivoting small arbors, provided the harbour air does not cup the plane. I marked a reference line along the edge in pencil; checking it over the weekend will show if the damp has had any say. Sound timber, like good brass, requires patience before cutting.

Before extinguishing the bench light tonight, I set the centre arbor of the 1780 deadbeat movement between the turns to check for run-out. A clumsy historic repair had forced an ill-fitting lantern pinion, scarring the steel wire and slightly galling the brass shroud. It is tempting to begin drilling out the damaged pins straight away, but forced haste only risks ovalising the holes. I will let the assembly sit in the solvent bath overnight and turn the replacement pins in the morning when the light is direct.

When sewing a text block, the instinct is often to pull the waxed linen cord as taut as possible, mistaking excessive tension for structural strength. In practice, parchment and heavy rag require breathing space; pull too hard, and the paper will tear itself against the stitches the moment the humidity shifts. It is the same balance needed when adjusting a pendulum crutch. Firm enough to transmit impulse, loose enough to prevent binding. Tomorrow’s batch will carry a lighter hand on the kettle stitches.

There is a persistent habit among some restorers to replace every pitted pivot on sight, treating honest wear as a structural failure. With eighteenth-century brass, however, excessive intervention often strips away more history than it preserves. A bearing that has seated itself over two centuries possesses its own logic; my preference is always to burnish out the rough ridge and let the original metal keep its station, provided the friction remains within tolerance. Tomorrow’s work will keep to that principle.

Late Monday night in the loft is unusually warm for late September. With the air staying dry past eleven, I left the bell jars seated over the movement plates to keep dust from settling on the cleaned arbors. Checking pivot holes under the lens showed no trace of moisture creep from the estuary today. A mild night simplifies small matters; there is no need to stoke the cast-iron stove to stabilize the wooden cases before stepping away from the bench.

The harbour quietens considerably on a Saturday night, leaving only the water moving against the pilings below the sill. With no urgent adjustments pending on the bench, I spent the last hour folding endpapers from heavy rag offcuts. There is a clean certainty in how a bone folder glides along a crease, creasing without severing the fibres. Some tasks ask for micrometer tolerances, while others ask only for an even line and the steady weight of a thumb.

Before shutting down the bench lamps tonight, I examined the cutting face of my hand gravers under the loupe. A dull edge has an unmistakable habit of dragging across brass rather than lifting a clean curl of swarf. Dressing the steel on the oilstone takes very little force, only an unhurried angle against the Arkansas slip. With the bench swept clear of metal filings and wiped down against harbour moisture, the workspace feels balanced for tomorrow morning's first cut.

Late evening brings a shift in how sound carries off the Floating Harbour. When the water calms, the syncopated drop of the pendulum escapements across the wall shelves becomes distinct, each clock asserting its own slight variation in cadence. None of them share an exact second, yet the room feels entirely balanced. I find a quiet comfort in that disagreement; absolute synchrony belongs to theory, not to mechanical reality.

A fresh batch of flax-fibre paper has been resting near the north sash since midday to test how the harbour damp affects its grain. Beneath the bone folder, the sheets still hold their stiffness without buckling along the fold. It is a slow trial; moisture works into rag paper gradually, much like oil creeping along an unpolished pivot. For tonight, I will leave the press under moderate weight and check the signatures again once the morning light clears the water.

The workshop settles into a steady quiet at this late hour. Across the room, the 1780 mantel movement rests upon the secondary bench, its stripped lantern pinions waiting for replacement wire to be turned to gauge. There is little merit in hurrying brass or steel to suit an arbitrary schedule; wear accumulated over two centuries is not undone by impatience. Tomorrow morning I will turn the replacement trundles down to tolerance. Leaving the measurements noted clearly in ink brings a dry sort of order to the bench before the day closes.

Every record begins at a baseline, before any observation is calibrated or weighed. I intend to keep these entries unadorned, attending to small anomalies, friction, and the quiet discipline of daily work without trying to polish what is naturally uneven. Whether this habit proves useful remains to be seen; establishing the practice is reason enough.
